Trip Back to Kuantan

>> Monday, June 30, 2008

It's surely been AGES since I last wrote anything on this site. Really sorry to our dear readers for the period of silence on the blog.

I've been extremely busy lately with a project & I've also been keeping myself busy with some arrangements for a family-friend's wedding back in Kuantan. Anne on the other hand is currently based in Kulim already, & is pretty much in a hair-pulling phase due to her project...lol.
I actually left for Kuantan on Wednesday evening & oh, it was another 'drama' in life :S ... here goes the story...

I've arranged with TL to give me a ride to a train station after work. We were supposed to leave office latest by 6pm. The mad thing(s) about that day (25th June) were:

  1. I had a lot of work to complete before I leave for Kuantan. I took TWO days leave on a peak week...bummer...no choice man...

  2. Servers were down one after another & I just couldn't start on my work until AFTER lunch!! Can you imagine that?? I wasted half the day 'trying' to get things working, but to no avail! *argh!!*
  3. It was Mei's last day with us at ITSC, so we took a 1.5 hours lunch break! Yeah man...when my workload was mountain-high, I still had a 1.5 hours lunch break... *great! :S*

  4. I couldn't complete my work even around 5.30pm!

  5. TL was called into a meeting around 5.40pm!!! Bummer!! Why of all times at 5.40pm when I need to leave by 6pm??? *pulls hair out*

Anyways, I managed to get to Kuantan in time....caught the bus on time (and even had spare time). I was really busy running around helping out with the wedding (from 25th June - 28th June) that I didn't really get to go food-hunting whatsoever. I spent most of my time there finishing up the hand-made guest book for the wedding (more photos will be uploaded later when I get it from the official photographer) & formatting/finalizing the guest list for the wedding dinner. What I kinda regret is that I didn't get to take that many photos while I was there for the wedding since I was helping out here & there *sigh* Oh well...here are 3 photos taken in Kuantan nonetheless...

One of the 'guest books' in the shape of a tree...spray painted the tree myself & did up all the deco too! *faints*

The wedded couple: Rach (good friend) & Calv (family friend)
Flower girls: Phoebe & Nichol, my 2 darlings...kekeke

Although I didn't get to do much while I was there, I'm actually very thankful that I spent quite a lot of priceless time with my 'families' there...plus I also had ONE chance to spend time at the beach with a friend! Nice.

Times spent with family & friends are priceless. I'll keep our readers updated on our 'adventures', so stay tuned!

Farewell for Mei

>> Thursday, June 26, 2008

Mei left us (& our company) to further her studies :( *sob sob* Mei's a very good friend to our gang, & for myself, I've known her for 8 months now (for the rest of the gang, they've been friends since foundation year in uni!). Recalling the time when I first joined the company, myself & my 'twin', Shiv, were accepted into their gang on our 2nd day of reporting to work, & since then, we've been stuck to the gang 'til now *sigh* Time really flew by...

Front (L-R): Shiv, Mei, Lian, Rao, Alex
Back (L-R): Alvin, Christina, Ruth, Toby, Kiew, Moon, Brian, Cha Foo

We gave her a sumptous farewell lunch at the usual Fook Hin Bah Kut Teh & Seafood Restaurant in Seri Kembangan. The service there was definitely better than many other places, & the food is tasty AND affordable in price!

Here's a glimpse of what we ordered & we paid less than RM15/person (13 people) for 7 dishes!

Kam Heong style prawns
Lemon Chicken

Fried squid rings

'Sei dai tin wong' (Four types of beans)

Sweet & sour pork

I've written a post on this place previously, so I won't elaborate further on the place :P Nonetheless, here's what we had, & we do recommend these dishes to all faithful readers of PerutBesi!

Crave for Puri!

>> Monday, June 23, 2008

I realized that I haven't had poori for a LONG time! Today, I visited Klang Wesley under the TRAC MYF committee with Lawrence & James. No doubt, we had our fair share of food-hunting before visiting the youth group, which was VERY vibrant, & we also had our 'dose' of Klang bah kut teh after youth meeting :P

I don't have much information of food places this time as the food wasn't all that fantastic, but we had Indian food for breakfast in the Indian Street near Klang Wesley, & we had bah kut teh at Teluk Pulai Bah Kut Teh. I'm still yet to find a really good bah kut teh! Hahaha...anyone has any suggestions? ;)

The 3 of us had quite a lot for breakfast...3 pooris, 2 vadeys, 1 roti canai, 1 tosai telur... the list goes on...hahaha...*burp*

Puri (Poori)- crispy, pale golden in color bread that puffs up almost like a ball!

Affordable, Tasty Western Food

>> Friday, June 20, 2008

Don't you just wish for some 'cheap' & delicious Western food?

In a nice, cool environment as well...?

Gosh..it's been too long since I wrote anything here...been caught up with work & loads of other stuff as well...didn't go out for any nice food as well *sigh* Anyways, my colleagues & I just had some pretty good Western food this week :) What we like about this place is that:

1. We don't need to drive so far to get reasonably good food (petrol price has gone up so much :( )2. We don't need to pay a lot to enjoy a nice lunch! <-- this is SO important!

The place that I'm talking about in this post is none other than MMU's (Multimedia University, Cyberjaya) hostel-cafeteria!! Hahaha...shocked that a university's cafeteria is found with good food? It's seriously not too bad for the price we pay...and yes, the public can enter that university for meals :)

That uni has several cafeterias; if I'm not mistaken, there is one cafeteria below every hostel block. One of the girls' hostel blocks (block 4, not really sure) offers this Western food stall, which serves burgers, pastas, chops, to side dishes like mash potatoes, fries, etc! It has quite a wide range of Western food, & prices start from RM2+ for a burger to RM8+ for chops!

Here's a glimpse of what my colleagues & I had that day....I didn't get to snap photos of everyone's food 'cause by the time I got to the table, most of them have started on their lunch already :(

Farfalle with Tuna, Mushrooms, & Cream (RM7.00/plate)
This pasta is nice! If you're a person who like carbonara-style pastas, this is for you :P It's ribbon-pasta with cream sauce filled with Tuna flakes & sliced button mushrooms, with some Italian herbs to give it a 'kick' :) The serving looks small, but it is REALLY filling, thanks also to the cream!
Chicken Bolognaise Spaghetti (RM6.00/plate)
If you're not a beef-lover, or if you can't take beef, then this is a good option for you :) With just RM6, you'll get a delicious plate of spaghetti with shredded chicken meat, diced carrots & tomatoes, sprinkled with Italian herbs!

Mashed Potatoes with cheese [large] (RM2.00 for a large serving)
I thought that this is indeed a bowl of 'value meal'!! It's WAY cheaper than KFC & it tastes good too!! I reckon the best part is not just the potatoes, but the generous serving of sauce to accompany the smooth mashed potatoes! *drools -- potato-lover I am*

If you're working around Cyberjaya & don't know where else to go for lunch, MMU's cafeteria isn't too bad an option :)

Kam Heong Duck Rice, New Town

>> Saturday, June 14, 2008

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when I mention 'duck rice'?

When Chris suggested that we had duck rice for dinner yesterday, 'roast duck' came into the picture. Never did I ever thought that the duck rice that we were to have was not roast duck! It was 'lou ngap', which is something like steam, or more like 'braised' duck, Teochew-style! Mmmmm...yums!

I didn't know that the Kam Heong coffeeshop in New Town, PJ (a.k.a State) opens at night JUST for duck rice! During the daytime, this place is packed with stalls & faithful patrons...and it's really stuffy!! But it's just SOOO different at night! :)

They have a decent variety of dishes, from duck to salted veggie, braised mushrooms, dark-sauce boiled egg, & many more :) The rice is also good! Chris claims that the rice is 'so good you can even eat it on its own'!

For RM9.00/person, we had duck, braised mushrooms, salted veggie, & rice :) A little pricey, but I reckon that the current price for duck rice is about this range. The food is good & the atmosphere is also not too bad, considering that it's just a humble coffeeshop!

Here's what we had:

Braised duck for 2 persons

Braised mushrooms
Salted veggie cooked with roast pork bits

Simply Fusion, Jaya One

>> Tuesday, June 3, 2008

Looking for a cozy place to dine?

Feel like having some fusion food?

Don't want to spend so much on food, but want to have decently good, if not really good food?

Simply Fusion Cafe will meet your needs :) Located at Jaya One, Petaling Jaya, this little cafe has a very cozy feeling, & most importantly, it isn't noisy!! The service here is also good & the variety is really interesting! Set meals are available in 2 categories: Value Set & Premium Set. Value sets come with a main course, ice lemon tea/coffee/tea, & a slice of cake for RM17.90- RM22.90. Premium sets come with a main course, ice blended drink, a slice of cake for RM23.90 - RM27.90. All the food served were rather impressive, I could say :) Not to forget, the portion of food for the price you pay is also good!

I was there with 3 of my friends, Jinn, Chit Chong, & Chris C. for lunch. This place is VERY suitable for catch ups, & I have no regrets having my lunch there on Sunday! Do try this place out for yourselves!

Passion Fruit Bubble Tea (RM4.90) & Ice Lemon Tea
The 'bubbles' were a little too dry & hard for my liking, but overall, the tea actually taste quite nice. They could improve on the 'bubbles'! :D

Root Beer Spaghetti (RM11.80)
This spaghetti has a Mexican touch. It's basically spaghetti with slightly spicy sauce that has beans (kidney beans & chick pea), onions, tomatoes, minced meat, & herbs. It's quite interesting & different compared to the usual bolognase. The portion may look small, but when you really dig in, you'll find yourself slowly getting satisfied & filled! :)
Chicken Chop with Crinkle-Cut French Fries & Caesar Salad (RM11.80 ala carte) -- this one came in the value set
The Chicken Chop here is accompanied by a choice of mushroom sauce, black pepper sauce, or brown sauce. Chit Chong had it & he seems quite satisfied with it. The fries were awesome, while the salad was fresh! Yums!

Chicken Chop with Butter Rice & Caesar Salad (RM11.80 ala carte)

Orea Cheese Cake (~ RM5.00/slice ala carte) -- this one came with the value set
The cake looks presentable & tastes quite nice too. Simply Fusion offers a good variety of cakes & I heard that their chocolate cakes & brownies tastes good! I haven't had the chance to try 'em out though...

Strawberry Field Cafe, USJ 10 Taipan

>> Monday, June 2, 2008

James, Chris, & I had lunch at this pretty cosy restaurant in Taipan on Saturday. Strawberry Field Cafe offers a wide variety of local & fusion cuisine, at quite reasonable prices :) I've no idea why the place is called strawberry field when there isn't any strawberry-full dishes! *lol* Oh yes, food there is halal too! :D

They have set lunch of the day, which costs less than RM10.00, & the portion of food is moderately generous too :) Food there is not too salty, quite flavourful, & most importantly, the price you pay for the food you get is a good deal!

Here are some pics to tell the story:

Butter Cream Chicken with Rice (around RM 7.90)

Lemon Grass Chicken with Rice (around RM6.90)

Pandan Chicken with Green Curry & Rice (around RM7.90)

Potato Salad (around RM4.00)

If you happen to be around the Taipan area, this is not too bad a place to eat :) Bon apetit!
