Review: Selera Ramadhan Ala Kampung @ Armada Hotel

>> Sunday, June 30, 2013

The date is drawing closer to the start of the holy month of Ramadhan where all Muslims will begin fasting. Many restaurants & hotels are also preparing their "Buka Puasa"/"breaking of fast" menu to provide all Muslims & people in Malaysia an enjoyable dining experience as they break fast during the month of Ramadhan.

Utara Coffee House of Armada Hotel Petaling Jaya is proud to present to you their Selera Ramadhan Ala Kampung! Featuring an elaborate spread of over 100 tantalizing authentic kampung dishes, the team of professional chefs aim to bring you on a nostalgic journey to your well-loved mom's or grandma's cooking.

You will be spoilt for choice with the variety of dishes like the Kerabu, Lemang, Serunding, Satay, Roast Whole Lamb, Asam Laksa, & more!

Here are some of the dishes available at the sumptous buffet spread:

Ulam-Ulam/ Raw Vegetables
Begin your buka puasa with something refreshing & healthy with the fresh vegetables & herbs :)

Various Spicy Sauces/Dips (Sambal) to Accompany the Ulam

Nasi Kerabu/Ulam
My favourite for the night! Seriously...! I haven't had this for a while & I was very surprised that it was so tasty! The taste of the kerabu in the rice wasn't over-powering & the ulam/raw vegetables weren't sliced too chunky :) Thumbs up!

Kerabu Daging
I loved this as well :)

Kerabu Kulit Kaki Ayam/De-boned Chicken Feet
Interesting dish! I haven't had this for ages......

Ikan & Telur Masin...

Rojak Buah

Kari Kepala Ikan/Fish Head Curry

Nasi Briyani
Pretty tasty, but I felt that the rice was a little too soft for my liking of a nasi briyani.

Chicken Kebab
This one's actually good! What the chef does is to stuff the kebab chicken meat into mini pita bread with some vegetables & mayonnaise - I loved the smokiness of the chicken tucked in the humble pita bread & its fillings.

Ayam Mas Merah Bersusu

Sotong Masak Lemak

Lemang & Serunding Ayam/Daging
The lemang/fire-roasted glutinous rice was really soft & delicious :) Went very well with the serunding/meat floss.

That's quite a lot of dishes already, right? Haha...there are LOADS more like the Nasi Tomato Kacang Pis, Nasi Mentega Jintan Manis, Nasi Bukhari Ayam, Bubur Lambuk and the uniquely prepared  Nasi Seafood Zaini – Chef Zaini’s Secret Recipe. Other dishes include Ayam Mas Merah Bersusu, Mutton Masalla, Kerang Cili Thai, Roast Duck Hong Kong Style, Green Beef Curry, Siput Sedut Masak Lemak Cili Padi, Black Pepper Flower Crab and Pei Pai Duck with Sweet Sauce.

*takes a deep breath*

Ikan Yu Masak Lemak Bernenas, Rendang Perut, Siput Sedut Masak Cili Api and Szechuan Beancurd with Seafood, Fattelal, Lobiah Ke Lahm Ghanam and Qara Be Lahmel El Ghanam....

I can't even say out all the long list of dishes in 1 breath! There are also desserts to look forward to indulge!

Dessert: Fresh Fruits

Dessert: Bubur Gandum

Dessert: Assorted Malay & Nyonya Kuih
I love the colours! :D

Dessert: Red Velvet Cake (and many others to choose from)

My 1st plate...wonderful start to the gastronomic journey!

*I think I'm on the verge of getting a heart attack with the load of dishes available!*

You'll also find stalls featuring the best of Armada’s Ramadhan delicacies such as  Satay, Otak-Otak Daun Nipah, Keropok Ikan dan Likor and the infamous Sup Tulang Lembu, Perut dan Hati served with Roti Bai.

Freshly "barbecue-d" Otak-Otak Daun Nipah & Satay

Satay - I liked it

Whole Roast Lamb

Roast Lamb & Otak-Otak
I actually prefer the roast lamb from Seri Pacific Hotel over this one, but I must say that the otak-otak is a must-have here! I can't get good otak-otak just anywhere in PJ (free-flow some more weiiii.....) :P

Generous portion of otak-otak that's well marinated ;)

Sup stall - Sup Tulang Lembu, Perut dan Hati served with Roti Bai

Penang-style Assam Laksa!

I felt the soup was a little too thick for my liking & lacks the fragrance of the bunga gantang, but overall, it's a good treat :)

Fresh seafood (can be grilled, I think)

Dessert: Ice Kacang

To end your buka puasa experience at Armada with maximum-satisfaction, you have to try the Roti Durian (for durian lovers) - creamy durian filling in a crispy & chewy roti canai dough :)

Roti Durian goes well with Vanilla Ice-Cream too!
I was SOOOO stuffed....but SATISFIED! :D

It's a dining experience that you'll not want to miss, here, at the Utara Coffee House :)

Review: Seri Pacific Hotel's Ramadan Buffet Preview

>> Monday, June 24, 2013

Overall comment: I love the variety offered & the freshness of the ingredients used. It's not overly priced as well & the most important thing is that...the food tastes good!
Halal: Yes

The Seri Pacific Hotel Kuala Lumpur will be offering the “Citarasa Kampung” Buffet in conjunction with the Ramadhan Buka Puasa. The buffet aims to be one of the finest & biggest buffet spreads in town, providing a comfortable & convenient dining experience during the fasting month. Priced from RM80.00nett per adult, the buffet will be served from 14th July 2013 – 3rd August 2013 at the Pacific Ballroom. Every RM1.00 from each Ramadan Buffet "ticket" sold will be contributed to the Tabung Kebajikan Islamic Aid Malaysia (IAM) and Majlis Kanser Nasional (MAKNA) under Seri Pacific Hotel's “Sentuhan Kasih Ramadhan” program.

Dining Hall

Welcome & Opening Speech
Mohamed Halim Merican, General Manager of Seri Pacific Hotel Kuala Lumpur gave the opening speech. If I didn't mention his name, don't you think he looks like our PM? ;)

The buffet offers a wide spread of delicious & exclusive range of dishes, featuring over 500 different dishes each day that will certainly satisfy all hunger pangs & cravings for a good meal after a day of fasting! You can be sure to expect traditional cuisines such as Pucuk Ubi Rebus, Daging Dendeng, Nasi & Briyani Gam at this extensive buffet spread :)

Traditional & fusion cuisines
I don't think mussels are part of the traditional, but the rest are certainly traditional dishes :) Perut Lembu Masak Lemak Rebung (Beef Tripe & Bamboo Shoots in Coconut Milk), Sambal Udang Petai (Spicy Petai/"Smelly Beans" with Prawns), Stir-Fried Mussels with Chili, & Pucuk Ubi Rebus Lemak (Sweet Potato Shoots in Coconut Milk).

Bubur Lambuk

Mee Rebus Stall

The lamb is the best among all the other meat dishes!

Briyani Gam
I must say that the briyani rice is really delicious! Especially when it is paired with the vegetable dhal! :D

Eyes of Malaysia
I'm Malaysian, but I don't really fancy cow's liver & the alike :S I don't mind the beef rendang though...

Clockwise from top right: Lauk Limpa Kari (Spleen), Paru Dendeng (Lungs), Daging Dendeng (Beef), Beef Rendang.

Kuey Teow Goreng Basah
This is the Malay-style of fried kuey teow, which is very different from the Chinese Penang-style fried kuey teow. It is more "wet" or with some gravy, which can be quite tasty if it is not overly flooded with gravy. According to VC, this kuey teow goreng basah is very nice!

Ramadhan-Inspired Maki
It's basically rice rolls with serunding (spicy beef floss) or sambal ikan bilis (spicy anchovies)! Quite interesting although it's not one of my favourites.

Lok-Lok Stall
No idea why they call it "Fatty Corner" when they got a skinny chef to mend that stall! :D I think it's inspired by the Fatty's Lok-Lok truck that has become very famous in town.

Ramadhan-Inspired Pizza
Similar to the sushi stall, the pizzas here come with sambal ikan bilis, serunding, & other Ramadhan favourites.

Some of the highlights of the buffet are the Sup Gear Box “Power”, Sup Ekor Bakar, Roasted Marinated Whole Lamb, Kari Kepala Ikan, Ikan Bakar and Lok-Lok. My favourite was none other than the roasted marinated whole lamb! The meat was tender, juicy, & nicely marinated. Paired with the black pepper sauce, it was just an experience not to be missed! For those who would like to begin their breaking fast with something healthier, there's a good variety of fresh ulam-ulam kampung & salads as well.

Another must-visit stall!

For the healthy-junkies :D

Assortment of side dishes

Gado-Gado :)

Assortment of chips & crackers

At every good buffet, the dessert section is certainly something to look forward to. You'll find the much-loved Bubur Lambuk, Air Batu Campur (ABC - shaved ice with several types of sweet ingredients like red beans, grass jelly, sweet corn & syrup), an assortment of pastries, local Malay "kuih", & local seasonal fruits, including the all-time-favourite Durian (for those who love it)!

Fresh Fruits

A good variety of desserts & local favourites

My favourite of the night: Durians!!
The durians were really nice...durian kampung! :D

The list is never-ending! Thirst-quenchers of all sorts will also be available at the buffet spread such as Air Kelapa (coconut water), Sirap Bandung (sweet rose syrup with evaporated milk), Nescafe Tarik ("pulled' Nescafe coffee) and Teh Tarik ("pulled" milk tea) at the “Latar Kijang Beverage Station”.

If you think that's all, I'm sorry to say that you're wrong this time around :P To further enhance your dining experience with the Ramadhan buffet, all guests will also be serenaded by live musicians known as 'Los Labamba’, a 4-piece band all the way from Indonesia. Fantastic, right?

It's really something not to be missed for the next 1 month! If you prefer to have the Seri Pacific Hotel team over at your house/office for a "Hari Raya Open House", catering services are also provided from RM80.00nett per person. Reservation details can be found at the end of the post :)

Have a meaningful fasting month ahead!
