A Little Dim Sum Place, SS2

>> Sunday, June 20, 2010

Venue: A Little Dim Sum Place, SS2, Petaling Jaya
Occasion: Gathering of friends
Overall comment: Not the place for proper, authentic dim sum. It's more like a youngster's fast-food kinda dim sum place minus the piping hot, steamed dim sum, pushed on a cart. Like it or not, this place has its constant flow of crowd! I'm amazed...
Halal: No

Total bill = RM42.65 (inclusive of Chinese tea for 3 persons & service tax)

It was one of those random weekends where 3 friends just gathered for breakfast. Not knowing where to go, we just headed to a nearby dim sum restaurant that we've never been before. Some place with air-conditioner is always preferred, but after considering the quality of the food that we had, we may not go there another time (it's just a personal preference)...

A Little Dim Sum Place is very easily located as it's smacked right at the heart of the busy SS2 (PJ) area. It's near the police station, beside Maybank, facing the field near the morning market, so I doubt you'll miss it.

We're just very selective young ladies when it comes to food. To us, this is more like a fast-food dim sum place, than the usual dim sum restaurants with carts carrying piping-hot steamed dim sum being pushed around the tables (which we much prefer). Perhaps that's what the owner intended this place to be (since its name is "A LITTLE Dim Sum Place") - a small place where substantial variety of dim sum are served *shrugs* :)

Nevertheless, here's what we had for some light breakfast (mind you, because of the price, we shared everything...hahaha...):

Porridge with Century Eggs & Minced Pork (RM2.70/bowl)
To be honest, it's a rather small bowl of porridge. The consolation is that there were century eggs in the porridge & some minced pork as well. Taste-wise, it's nothing to shout about.

Prawn dumpling (RM4.50/basket)
Thank goodness the prawns were fresh. If not, we would cry "foul"! Hahaha...yes, yes, we're picky eaters. I won't want to pay RM1.50 for a dumpling with prawns that aren't fresh! The dumpling's skin was slightly too thick though...

Siu Mai (RM3.80/basket)
Rather generous portion of prawns in a meat dumpling...!

Scallop Dumpling (RM6.00/basket)
Rip-off. Scallop was over-cooked & in our humble opinion, it isn't worth paying RM2 for a so-called scallop dumpling that doesn't satisfy. Much room for improvement!

Rice Noodle with BBQ Pork (RM3.80/serving)
This wasn't too bad albeit being too salty for our liking. Somehow, the SS2's Medan Selera offers a much better version of this "Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun". This (rice noodles) wasn't smooth enough.

Banango Prawn Fritter (RM6.00/serving)
We thought this sounded rather interesting, so we ordered it. The name tells it all: Banana-Mango Prawn Fritters - hmm...the taste of bananas over-powered the mangoes. If you enjoy something sweet & salty at the same time, you may want to try this. It's quite costly though...

Eggplant Stuffed with Fish Paste (RM4.00/serving)
SS3's Yong Tau Foo stall serves better stuffed eggplant!

Steamed Pork Ribs with Yam (I forgot the price)
Too small a portion & we hardly ate any yam. We felt that the dish had too much 5-spice powder, which somehow ruined the natural taste & fragrance of the yam & pork ribs.

This post is just based on our personal opinions. Go ahead to give this place a try & who knows, you may actually prefer this place to some other dim sum places around town ;) Do share your experiences with me. I would love to hear from you! :D

Asian Terrace Restaurant, Solaris Mont Kiara

>> Friday, June 11, 2010

Venue: Asian Terrace Restaurant, Solaris Mont Kiara
Occasion: Birthday dinner with mum & aunty Helen
Overall comment: Lovely Thai & Vietnamese dinner. Food was flavourful (just nice, not over-powering) & the serving was perfect. Food is slightly pricey, but I really feel that it's worth paying for what they serve.
Halal: Yes

I know, I still have more than a handful of back-logged posts. *sigh* I've been procrastinating to blog, but I'm trying to make it a point to blog at least once in 2-3 days :P Forgive me for such an attitude. It's temporal...hahaha...let me get back into the momentum & I'll be on the go! *woots!*

***********
Asian Terrace is indeed a place where I'll give thumbs up in terms of their food quality, taste, & ambiance. Price is no doubt above average as the restaurant is in Solaris Mont Kiara, but I feel that once in a while, it's just worth dining there :) Their Thai Green Curry is lovely!

Total bill: RM105.55 (after 15% discount off total bill)

I was searching on the internet for some good food places to treat my mum & aunty Helen. Chinese & Western were out of my list since both the ladies have such meals all too often. I wanted to treat them to something unique or special or just simply delicious. Price wasn't a factor for me on that particular occasion. After much browsing, I ended up taking them to Asian Terrace @ Solaris Mont Kiara. It's near my mum's workplace, so it was a good location for dinner :) (I don't need to drive too far nor get lost!)

The interior of the restaurant
I kinda like the ambiance. I feel that it's a fusion of Thai-Vietnamese-Balinese...cozy...we were there around 6:30pm, so there weren't any patrons yet! I wonder how's the business like for this place on a day-to-day basis.

Passion Fruit with Lemongrass & Mint (RM9.00/glass)
This was what I ordered. I enjoyed it! It's a little too sweet though, so if you order this fragrant drink, you may want to request for either more ice or less syrup. I loved the smell & taste of fresh mint + lemongrass, accompanied by the "passionate" passion fruit!

Lemongrass with Pandan (RM7.00/glass)
My mum had this & she enjoyed it. It's rather simple & it could afford a 'lil bit more of lemongrass, but it was a refreshing drink for a change :)

Ginger Tea (RM6.00/pot) - refillable hot water
According to aunty Helen, this ginger tea was aromatic & "clear"/"ching" in Cantonese. It's good to wash down the load of food...

Vietnamese Crystal Rolls with Prawns (RM18.00/serving)
Something light for starters :) Greens are good for you! We've been eating so much meat everyday that it's good to have a fresh veggie dish for a change :) The vegetables were actually fresh & juicy. The skin/wraps were slightly chewy due to the type of flour used to make the skin, but it's well complimented with the vegetables & the dip. The best part in this platter was no doubt the dip - irresistibly LOVELY!!! I kept drenching my rolls with the sauce/dip! Sweet, sour, slightly spicy....oooo....yums!

Thai Green Curry Fish Fillet (RM23.00/serving)
All 3 of us enjoyed this so much that we could just have this one dish with rice. The green curry was thick, fragrant, not too spicy, & it was really appetizing! Food here is SOOOOOO much better than My Elephant, a Thai restaurant I've tried once ("no fight"). I'm yet to try out some good Thai food place. Anyone has good recommendations?

Thai Glass Noodles Salad (RM18.00/serving)
This is one appetizer cum main dish! It's sourish & slightly spicy, yet, pleasant to the taste bud :) The restaurant's rather generous with the portion of glass noodles, & the harmony of meat & vegetables with the glass noodles were just perfect. I enjoyed every bite of the glass noodle's texture - not too springy, not too soft, but very smooth & just nice to slurp the noodles with the appetizing sauce covering the noodles :)

Thai Clear Tom Yam with Chicken (RM15.00/serving)
Sigh. The photos too dark! :'( Making it any brighter will just make the photo quality worse. Lighting in the restaurant's just not very good, especially when you're taking photos using a compact camera. The clear tom yam here did not lose out to the other dishes that we ordered that night. If you enjoy something quite sourish & spicy, this one's your call! Syiok! *caution: this is not suitable for those with gastric or stomach problems* <- but I ate it anyways...I just can't resist tom yam of any sort! :D

*Jasmine Rice (RM4.00/person) - this is OVER-PRICED!!

Dinner spread for 3 ladies - it was a great ladies'-night-out!

The 2 lovely ladies in my life :)

Sanbanto Cafe, SS2

>> Wednesday, June 9, 2010

Venue: Sanbanto Cafe, SS2, Petaling Jaya
Occasion: Birthday dinner with Gur
Overall comment: The pork ribs here rock!!! Not too expensive & the food is consistently good!
Halal: No

Total bill = RM76.00 (inclusive of 1 bottle mineral water + service charge)

Some piggies are "fresh" & pink...

Some piggies "charred-black"! You can only notice the nose & the popped-out eyes...

While some piggies are upside-down, best viewed sideways, or from the usual front/rear...

And all of such piggies, Sanbanto has it all! - Premium quality.... (don't play-play)

Sanbanto (三板头), a small 'lil deli + cafe selling fresh pork items & cooked porkilicious meals boasts of its high-quality pork, direct from their HACCP farm in Jemaluang ( Sam pan Tuo in Mandarin- hence Sanbanto), Johor. The farm & pigs products are certified by Moody's and ISO22000 approved, plus the pigs are fed with organic food instead of junk! So, there you go, some cleaner & healthier pork for your meals! Trust me, the pork served at this cozy cafe doesn't have that strong & yucky "porky" smell ;)

The cafe's rather small & I'm assuming that it can only fit around 24 persons at a time. If you don't wanna wait too long to be seated, make a reservation & be on time!

It was indeed a lovely dinner with Gur & I was satisfied to the brim! Stuffed, but felt so good!

Iced Honey Lemon Tea (RM4.90/glass)
SOUR + Honey sweet! It's like drinking "tom yam - the chili"...hahaha...too sour for my liking, but it's actually good for digestion after a heavy, meaty meal!

Cheese Baked Meat Balls (RM10.00/serving of 5 balls)
Gur & I are greedy...gluttons are we! Personal meal ain't enough...have to order some sides...and heck, we ordered a really "jelak" side....but it was GOOOOOOOOOOD. The meatballs were nicely marinated & seasoned, plus baked to perfection, covered in aromatic cheesy pool....ooooo....yums! It's no doubt slightly costly, but I reckon the generous portion of cheese just makes it worth paying :)

Sanbanto Pork Bolognase with Paparadelle (RM17.00/serving)
Simple, but lovely. The home-made Paparadelle were just-nice in texture. The bolognase sauce wasn't too rich, but the combination of herbs & spices used really enhanced the whole dish :) Gur loved this & he's a very picky eater!

BBQ Pork Ribs (RM38.00/serving)
I tell you, you MUSTN'T miss out this dish when you're here. This was ONE order that I will never regret ordering...I felt that this was better than the one I had at Checkers! The meat was tender & juicy (unlike Checkers & even Leornado's, which were slightly dry), plus it has an extra tempting layer of fats that melts in your mouth when you bite into it....oh, heaven! The mash potatoes were also creamy & irresistibly delectable. Ah...this was THE meal for pork lovers...thumbs up! (I sure hope they are consistent with their quality ;P) Oh yes, I must mention that the serving is also quite large & if you're not a big eater, don't stuff yourself with this dish; share it for greater enjoyment. The Ruthless Eater whacked this dish squeaky clean HERSELF! (with Gur's help on the corn cos she just can't eat anymore...but the corn's juicy & perfectly 'buttered' too!)

If you happen to be around the area or if you're in PJ, but don't know where to eat (and don't mind something porky - they have other meat as well), drive over to Sanbanto & try out this place at least once in your entire lifetime. I don't think you'll be disappointed (no guarantees though :P)

My 6-Months "Honeymoon"?

I've been so caught up at Puchong during the day time (at the MSTB Q-Lab) that by that time I get back to Cyberjaya, I don't feel like doing anything "heavy" anymore. I just wanna laze & chill-out instead of blogging! Hahaha...

At times, I sit down & wonder if what I've decided to take up (the MSTB's scholarship for 6 months) is worth while & if it's the right decision. After much consideration, I've decided that it's nothing to be regretful of, although there are lack of 'employee's benefits'. I reminded myself to live a life of gratitude to God for all things that He has blessed me with instead of focusing on weighing out the benefits I have for myself.

I certainly can't trade the new-found friends that I've found through this program, & with just this ONE reason (no doubt there are more than just this reason), I can confidently proclaim that this is a program worth taking up :) Thanks to all 10 of my new MSTB-Scholar friends! You guys/gals rock!!

Oh, btw, I passed my CPRE paper! I'm a certified Requirements Engineer by the International Requirements Engineering Board! Wheeeeeeee.............praise God! :D

... and now, for the food post! ;)

**********
Venue: My Honeymoon Dessert House, IOI Boulevard, Puchong Jaya
Occasion: PerutBesi's birthday & mini-farewell
Overall comment: EXTENSIVE variety of desserts! I was amazed...desserts aren't "to die for", but they're all lovely :)
Halal: Yes

It's not often that you'll come across a good dessert place. Perhaps one of the more famous dessert place in PJ is the KTZ Cafe, which I don't particularly fancy. It's not just the variety of desserts that are available, but the prices as well. *sigh*

Right after dinner at Kissaten, where we celebrated my birthday & mini farewell, we headed to My Honeymoon, right across Kissaten for some dessert. This place is a small, quite quiet, yet cozy 'lil cafe, offering an extensive range of desserts, from the usual "tong sui" to the unique ice-shavings with mixed ting-a-ma-jigs & the humble "tau foo fa" in some fusion style! :) This Puchong branch is one of the many branches available in the Klang Valley, & I found out that they have other outlets in 1Utama, Sunway Pyramid, & Kepong as well!

If you're a person crazee for desserts or if you have a sweet tooth, you'll not want to miss trying out this place at least once :) We took a LONG time just to decide on our dessert as the menu has (I think) more than 80 types of desserts....?? (Well, each page of the menu has around 20 variants of a particular dessert. There are at least 5 pages- front & back, filled with all types of desserts!)

p/s: Liza, let's go together one day! It's near MSTB only!!

The My Honeymoon Dessert Cafe

The simple menu
It's a very "Chinese" place...or more like some Hongkee-influenced place. Lighting isn't very good for photography, so bear with the distorted-looking photos, yeah?

Frankly speaking, I can't remember all the names of the desserts that we ate, nor can I recall the prices. It's also because I wasn't given the chance to keep the receipt! Toby snatched it away from me & crushed it up (he treated us to the desserts...I think the bill came up to around RM80.00? Each dessert costs around RM6.50 or more)

Ice Shavings with Sago, Slightly Sweetened Evaporated Milk, & Aloe Vera Bits
This is quite a refreshing dessert, although it's slightly heavy (since there's milk). It's not too sweet, to my greatest delight, & the portion of sago + aloe vera bits were really generous! You can have mouthfuls of sago in each scoop :)

The 'naked' "Tau Foo Fa" - nothing fanciful ;)
I doubt it's the smoothest & best of "tau foo fa"s but oh well, it's a nice dessert anyhow.

Ice Shavings with Mango, Mixed Fruits & Jelly
This one's pretty delicious :D It's very frutti-tutti & the 'coolness' of the ice shavings made the dessert more appetizing & "fun" to eat!

The "Yin & Yang" Tau Foo Fa - Black Sesame + Tau Foo Fa
I thought this was an interesting combination. I haven't tried such a "tau foo fa" before, but I sure wouldn't mind trying this out someday ;)

My Sweetheart (if I recall its name correctly)
A rather unique combination of cool vanilla ice cream on top of warm mashed sweet potatoes, crushed peanuts, black grass jelly @ cincau, & sago, I think. If you're adventurous & needed some kinda filling dessert (or if you're still hungry), do try this one out. Just bear in mind not to order this if you're already full after dinner!

Black Glutinous Rice with Glutinous Rice Balls Stuffed with Crushed Peanuts
More commonly known in Chinese as the "hak lou mai + tong yuen". The "santan-heart-shape" didn't come with the dessert....it's just something that I designed for photography sake :P Lian said this wasn't very yummy, but it's also because she didn't order this, but the red bean soup instead. It was a wrong order, but she just went ahead to dig in...

Ice Blended Red Bean Drink ("hong dau ping" in Cantonese)
I've no idea how this tastes like as I didn't get to try it, but if you fancy red bean, it's worth a try ;) So far, none of my friends said anything horrible/bad about the desserts here...all of them thought the desserts were acceptable, even though some desserts were quite strange...hahaha...

"Tau Foo Fa" with Honeydew
Oh, such peculiar desserts they have here! :S I really wonder if it tasted good...fruits with beancurd, anyone?
