Highlights of Food & Fun in Penang

>> Monday, December 31, 2012

Trips to Penang & Ipoh with the family are more often for the food than the sight-seeing. There were a couple of places that I re-visited, while some were new-found places :) On the overall, our 5 days 4 nights trip to Penang & Ipoh was a good one. There were ups & downs, no doubt, but I thank God for family & time together.

Here are some highlights of our trip to Penang:

Must try - Chee Cheong Fun with Prawn-Peanut Paste at Genting Cafe, Greenlane
(RM2.00/small portion of 2 chee cheong fun, RM3.00/large portion of 3 chee cheong fun - photo below shows a large portion). You may have to queue up for 15 - 20 minutes to get your plate of chee cheong fun! For more information on this place, you may refer to my previous blog post here.

Another must-try - Hokkien Mee/Prawn Mee at Sin Kim Sun coffeeshop on Macalister Road
This stall is only opened for breakfast or maybe lunch. A bowl of normal prawn mee costs RM4.00 - RM5.00, while the special prawn mee with additional deep-fried mantis prawns, roast pork, & pork ribs costs RM7.00/bowl. It's flavourful!

Good Banana-Leaf Rice - No Shop Name!
For banana leaf rice with dried chicken curry, we spent only RM20.20 that fed FOUR persons 'til we're SO satisfied! You'll find this small shop on Lebuh Acheh/Armenian beside Chiat Cheong Sdn Bhd. It's quite a humble & authentic banana leaf rice shop :)

Assam Laksa, Satay, & Loads of  Good Food at Goodall Cafe, Jalan Gottlieb
From what we've tried, below are the best food dishes. The Mee Rebus & Orh Chien weren't good, so don't bother trying.

Going places in Penang
See if you can go to all the 30 sites for the sculptures/paintings around Penang city centre. I only managed to go to 22 places...8 more to go! I'll finish it the next time I'm there :D We also visited various places around the Penang heritage area & Fort Cornwallis (just the outside). We got sun-burnt thanks to lovely weather!!

The one place that I would really want to share with all my readers is the Bukit Genting Cafe at Balik Pulau, Penang. I reckon not many people are aware of this place, & it's probably a good thing, but if you're really keen to go on an "adventure", this may be a place that would interest you.

The road up to Bukit Genting Cafe is very steep. You'll have to head to Balik Pulau area & watch out for a small signboard on your left that turns up to the restaurant. It's alike the Ampang Lookout Point, but better :) The journey up to the hill top can be rather scary, especially if you're driving a big car or if you're a new driver. However, once you're up there, the view is just breath-taking! You'll see more photos on my Facebook page.

This was the best dish of the night: Thai Green Curry Chicken (RM16.00/medium serving)
It's fragrant, quite spicy, & the chicken pieces are a plenty! Thumbs up!

Surprisingly good: Stir-Fried Kangkung Thai Style (RM10.00/medium serving)
It's slightly different from the usual kangkung belacan. It's not so spicy, but slightly sweet, yet the vegetable wasn't over-cooked. Nice!

Good Steamed Fish: Pae Sai (RM31.00/fish - market price)
Fresh siakap, steamed to perfection with chilli, parsley & loads of garlic - it has a sweet, sour, spicy, & savoury taste. Very appetizing :)

Slightly Disappointing Tom Yam Seafood (RM22.00/medium serving)
We were slightly disappointed by this dish as it was too sweet although quite spicy. The level of sour-ness wasn't at its "optimum" as well, so the entire dish didn't taste very balanced.

Stuffed Omelette Thai-Style (RM10.00/medium serving)
If you're not a fan of sweet saucey omelette with mixed vegetables, please do not order this. We had a hard time finishing this dish & we kinda regretted trying this out since it's something 'new' to us :P

Tab Tim Krob (RM2.00/serving)
It's not the best although quite refreshing. I still miss the one at Moo Kata, on Lorong Burma, opposite the Thai temple.

This place is a must-try for the experience of a good view & decent Thai food. It's quite an adventure to get there & to get out of that place...hahaha. If you're not familiar with Penang roads, it'll even be a greater adventure for you (just like how it was for me)!

I'll be posting up another post on the Ipoh trip, most probably tomorrow (1st day of the new year 2013)! Thank you for your support towards The Ruthless Eater @ PerutBesi & have a greater year 2013 ahead!

365 Days with People - Year 2012

Much has happened this year that I could not even recall EVERY single detail 'til I browse back on the photos that I have taken. Photos are like my "external brain"; if not for such memories captured on film/disk, I would struggle even more to recall all the lovely events that took place in the year 2012.

To summarize, this year has been one that's filled with time spent with people. It's probably a "wish come true" as I kinda recall wanting this year to be a year for people :) I attended more weddings than funerals this year, as well as went out for trips with friends & family, plus I spent quite a bit of time baking as well! Ah, lovely :) Reminds me of year 2011, where I spent quite a bit of time with people as well as self. This year, time for self has been minimized as I was either caught up with work or with events. It's all good nonetheless.

Next year, I wanna focus more on realigning my spiritual life & digging deeper into the roots of God. Lord, please give me the discipline to do so!

Highlights of Year 2012: Weddings

Highlights of Year 2012: Trips

p/s: Not to forget the trip to Raub with the youths! That's like an unforgettable moment...

How has your year 2012 been? I could say mine was meaningful & fruitful. How about you?

I certainly look forward to the coming year 2013 - with greater hopes, assurance, & peace as I walk into a new year, knowing that God is in control :)

Weddings, Camps & Christmas Eve Dinner

>> Tuesday, December 25, 2012

This entire year has been filled with weddings. I think I've attended roughly 15 weddings this year, helping out as bride's maid or maid of honour for 4 weddings - 1 in June, 2 in November, & 1 more in December! Madness, eh? Although I was really busy, I had loads of fun helping out in all of 'em & am truly blessed to be a part of my friends' weddings. Finally, most, if not all of my closer friends are married :)

As you would have noticed, I haven't been blogging much these 2 months. Most of my days are filled with work, weddings, or camps & I really didn't have the time & energy to sit in front of the computer & think of words to blog...haha...

Loads of events, eh?

Just tonight, my family & I were invited to our aunt's place for a lovely home-cooked dinner to celebrate Christmas Eve. It was just great to have some time with the family as I have been away for every other thing & with everyone else other than my family. My aunt did a great job in cooking up a storm! Woohoo!!

p/s: Photos below are taken with my new camera ;) Still learning to play around with the new toy...no further editing done except for watermarking & minor touch-up for the 360 shot of the family...

Singing Christmas Carols

As Christmas is already here, I sure look forward to celebrate the joyous occasion with my family & friends. I may not be blogging 'til next year as I will be away for a short family get-away to Penang & Ipoh from 26th December 2012 onwards! :D I'm really looking forward to some time with my family & some time for myself as well.

Here's wishing all my faithful readers a warm & lovely Christmas & a greater new year 2013 ahead!

Blessed Christmas & Happy New Year!

Write-Up: Christmas Tree Light Up, Seri Pacific Hotel KL

>> Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Seri Pacific Hotel Kuala Lumpur began its Christmas celebration with the Christmas Tree Light Up Ceremony. It was an event filled with much anticipation, joy, & laughter, as the in-house guests & corporate clients gathered for this special event.

The entire day of 6th December 2012 was lined up with activities to usher the season of Christmas. I was invited to witness the Christmas Tree Light Up as well as enjoy the rendition of songs by several children groups & adults. Guests were also served an array of delicious seafood canapes, mini burgers, prawn avocado salsa, deep-fried mushrooms with cream-cheese & also some roast chicken with mushroom sauce.

Clockwise L-R: Seri Pacific Hotel, Ensemble Performance, Ukelele Sunshine Kids

Clockwise L-R: Santa Claus & Santarina on their rounds, the only food photo that I took for the night - roast chicken, & the program flow for the evening

The ceremony began with a speech by the hotel's General Manager, Mohamad Halim Merican, followed by a speech by the COO of World Vision, Mr Liew Tong Ngan. After both the speeches, the guests were mesmerized by the appearance of Malaysian singer-song writer, Francissca Peter, who is also the ambassador for the International Aid Organization World Vision in Malaysia since year 2004. After the song by Francissca, she went up ahead to the tree to perform the much-awaited activity of the evening's event - lighting up of the Christmas tree (by just hanging her greeting card for World Vision on the tree!).

Clockwise L-R: Pouring of champagne, Strings performance by Arioso Sinfonia - a group of young & really talented children, Pop-songs by Sweet Melody of Philippines, & classics by Edmond Prior - a local artiste.

As I'll be leaving for a week-long camp in a couple of hours, I hope you've enjoyed looking at some of the photos taken at the event as well as reading the rather short write-up! I'll be back with some more posts before the year ends.

Have a great December & Happy 12.12.12 everyone!

Paradise Inn, Serangoon NEX

>> Friday, December 7, 2012

Throughout the month of November, I've had 3 weddings to attend, out of which I helped out in 2 of the 3 weddings as bridesmaid/maid of honour. It's been a very busy & hectic month, & moving into December, I thought things would settle down at least a little bit.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be the way as my weekends are occupied with either committee retreats, youth leadership camps, a wedding & even Christmas preparations! Fuh. With such a packed schedule, my poor blog has been abandoned *sobs* I'll try to keep it updated whenever I have time, yeah?

**********
Overall comment: Decent food at slightly higher prices. The customer service at this outlet is slightly too good when it comes to pouring soup! Hahaha...
Halal: No

I was in Singapore for almost a whole week 2 weeks ago for my best friend's wedding. I'm really blessed to have the opportunity to try out different types of food & restaurants each time I'm there. GN's parents treated me to my first meal upon my arrival in Singapore at Paradise Inn at Serangoon NEX. The Paradise group is quite a large group of restaurants, that even Malaysia has several outlets of their restaurants.

The outlet at Serangoon NEX is quite a cosy one. We ended up ordering a set meal for 2-3 persons + a medium serving of the pig's trotter mee hoon, aunty YC's favourite. According to her, it's a must-try!

Yummy braised peanuts
Soft & flavourful. It's quite addictive as well :)

Cutlery
Very Chinese :)

Mini "stove" for the soup
This helps to keep the soup warm.

Beancurd with minced pork on sizzling pan
The beancurd is quite nice, I must say. The gravy was slightly salty, but goes well with rice. It has eggs + salted fish as well!

One of the staff serving us our soup
Each time the staff here notices our soup bowl is empty, they will come by to ask if we would like more soup & help us dish out a hot bowl of soup. This happened at least 3 times until aunty YC could not take it any more (it's quite annoying to have someone asking you the same question every 10 minutes) & requested for them to stop serving us more soup as we can help ourselves! Hahahaha...we were so full of drinking the soup that we couldn't finish the other dishes!

Double-boiled wintermelon with chicken

Supreme Seafood Fried Rice
Fried Rice with Prawns & Fish Roe
The fried rice is probably one of the nicest dish in the set :) It's fragrant, the texture of the rice is just-nice (not too hard nor soft), & the prawns were also fresh. Biting into the fish roe & having it pop in the mouth is also quite "fun"...heehee...

 Stir-Fried Baby Kai Lan
There's nothing much to shout about except that the veggie could be fresher. The ones served to us were slightly yellowish & old.

Pig's Trotter Vermicelli (S$18.90/medium serving)
If you enjoy braised pig's trotter - the really fat ones, you'll love this dish! The vermicelli/mee hoon is very nice. It's slightly "thicker" & in Chinese, we call the texture, "kiew-kiew/qq"...means it's "springy". Overall the flavour is quite intense & the dish wasn't too oily although it has pig's trotter in it.

Dessert: Red Bean Soup
The meal was completed with this thick & sweet red bean soup, which I was too full to finish. I was stuffed!

The bill

I won't mind having a meal at Paradise Inn again. To the very least, with the price paid, you get some decent food & pretty good service :)
