Review: New Mag-A-Cone Cookie Crumble Ice-Cream

>> Wednesday, August 28, 2013

It's been almost a month since I wrote my last blog post. I've been terribly busy at work that my health has taken a plunge & for any 1-2 hours that I'm "free" from work, I just want to get away from the computer. Conference calls start in the morning & my last night call ends latest 11:30pm twice a week. I'm SO, very tired. I've to keep reminding myself to take care of my health above everything as I won't be getting extra pay nor recognition of sort if I die of health issues introduced by my work-lifestyle.

I've quite a number of pending posts, so do enjoy this post while I have some time-off from work to blog :)

******
Overall comment: I enjoyed the crisps of the chocolate & the cone, but the texture of the vanilla ice-cream could be firmer & not so soft. I wish the whole ice-cream is the cookie crumble ice-cream, but the cookie crumble ice-cream is only the 2nd layer. The top layer is still the chocolate + chocolate chips + vanilla ice-cream.
Halal: Yes

Those who love cookies & cream ice-cream & are always on the go should try Magnolia's new Mag-A-Cone's Cookie Crumble. You'll get a variety of textures in this irresistible treat - crunchy, soft, smooth, crispy

Retailing at RM2.20 per cone or RM7.90 per pack of 4 cones in 2 flavors (just like the box shown above), the Mag-A-Cone is available at all leading supermarkets, hypermarkets & your nearest grocery stores.

Upon tearing the wrapper, the ice-cream didn't seem to look anything like a cookie crumble ice-cream. Instead, it looked like the usual vanilla ice-cream cone. The ice-cream started melting quite fast as well, so I had to quickly snap the photos & start sinking my teeth into the ice-cream.

This ice-cream is like an ice-cream with a surprise. After licking off half of the ice-cream, walla, the cookie crumble ice-cream appeared! Tadaaaaa! I would love to have more of the cookie crumble ice-cream since it's SUPPOSED to be a cookie crumble ice-cream, not a duo ice-cream.

I'm looking forward to an improved formula by Magnolia if there is any :D Much room for improvement, F & N Creamaries :)

Ice-cream on a hot day is satisfying!

Review: Plus One Shabu-Shabu, 1 Utama

>> Tuesday, August 6, 2013

Overall comment: Extensive variety of broths! The one that I tried was really delicious, sweet, & tasty. It was packed with ingredients & flavor that enhanced the taste of the fresh meat & seafood :) It's slightly more up-market, but for the quality that you get, I think it's worth a visit every now & then.
Halal: No

How about having 19 different choices of nourishing broths & a whole load of ingredients to select from during lunch/dinner while you're shopping at 1 Utama? Sounds good, right? :D

Thanks to Open Rice Malaysia, I had the opportunity to review Plus One Shabu-Shabu's dishes & meet a whole group of new faces as well.

I was pleasantly surprised by the extensive variety at Plus One Shabu-Shabu 1 Utama & it's just a great idea to indulge in a nourishing & satisfying meal after hours of shopping...hahaha.

Spacious area for an enjoyable meal
This outlet can accommodate up to 150 pax a time. There are also 3 private rooms that can fit 10-12 pax.

The menu at 1 Utama's outlet
Extensive menu with much to offer...

Sugarcane & Water Chestnut Tea (RM10.00/jug)
A very interesting tea that uses sugarcane, water chestnut, watercress vegetable & carrots as the main ingredients. The tea is sweet, fragrant, & rather "addictive" as well! Once you taste it & like it, you'll keep wanting to refill :D

Out of the 19 broth flavors, the most popular one is the Macau Pork Bone & Corn broth! Most of us ordered that (it's pork!), while some others tried the other variants.

Macau Pork Bone & Corn Broth (RM6.00/broth - no charges to extra of same broth base)
Check it out! HUGE pork bone, 1 corn (in 3 pieces), some white radish, carrots (you can't see it here though), red dates, & wolf berries! SO yummy! Even on its own, it is already delicious. At the end of the meal, the soup was even more tasty. I had this & can testify that IT WAS GOOD!

Fish Broth (RM4.00/broth - no charges to extra of same broth base)
It didn't sound very convincing nor does it look very convincing, but there were no complaints of an undesirable "fishy-smelling/tasting" soup. I reckon it was simple & good :)

Prawn Broth (RM4.00/broth - no charges to extra of same broth base)
This broth is almost alike the Penang Hokkien Mee's (or Prawn Noodles') broth! The taste of prawn is very evident, but it got more & more salty as the broth reduces. At the end of the meal, you may not want to drink up the soup.

Thai Tom Yam Broth (RM4.00/broth - no charges to extra of same broth base)
This was pretty good. It's spicy & sour PLUS it had the fragrance of the lemongrass & kaffir-lime leaves :D Thumbs up!

As per all shabu-shabu meals, good sauces to pair with the different meats, soups, & noodles are extremely important! A good sauce/dip can enhance the taste of the meat or noodle & here at Plus One Shabu-Shabu, they have at least 11 types of sauces & dips!

Sauces & Dips - Must try!
Front left to right: Minced Beef sauce (goes well with rice/noodles), Tom Yam sauce (great for seafood), Sweet Sauce (pairs well with meat balls), Thai Chilli sauce (suitable for chicken & seafood), Hong Kong Chilli sauce (goes well with meat & seafood), Fermented Bean Curd sauce (great with vegetables, meat & seafood), Hawaii sauce (for meat & seafood as well), Taiwanese Satay sauce (suitable for chicken, pork loin & vegetables), Sesame Seed Oil, Soya Sauce, Salt, Pepper.

The perfect way to mix the sauces for pairing with meat
The mixed sauce on the far left consists of Hong Kong Chilli sauce (take the chilli without the oil) + a little bit of Fermented Bean Curd sauce + a splash of Sesame Seed Oil + chopped spring onions. This combination was recommended by the outlet manager :)

For the review, we had the Mixed Steamboat Set together with 10 other ala carte dishes! We were truly satisfied at the end of the meal & the soup was REALLY flavourful then :D *yums*

Mixed Steamboat Set (approx RM38.00/plate cos the menu only stated the Deluxe Seafood Set, which I think is different)
A good variety for 1 person.

Black Pearl (HK Century Egg) 黑珍珠(香港溏心皮蛋)(RM1.50/plate)
Unlike our local century eggs, the yolk of the Hong Kong's century eggs are slightly "fluid". It tastes great with the pickled ginger!
p/s: I'm not sure if this is the actual size cos RM1.50 for this size & type as the menu just stated century eggs.

Deep Fried HK Fish Skin 香港炸鱼皮 (RM10.00/plate)
One of the best snacks to have here. These fish skins were really crispy & the crunch just makes you want to have more & more! Another addictive item on the menu!

Golden Sand Sotong 金沙苏东 (RM25.00/plate)
Interesting item to have on the menu for a shabu-shabu restaurant. It's actually salted-egg with deep-fried baby octopus. Pretty tasty although not as nice as those from "dai chow" restaurants as the "wok hei" is better in those restaurants.
p/s: I'm not sure if this is the actual size cos RM25.00 for this size does sound very expensive!

Sliced Grouper 石斑鱼片 (RM18.00/plate)
 Fresh & "sweet" - yums :)

Three Seasons Meat Ball 三宝丸 (around RM20.00/plate as the menu didn't show 3 seasons but 4 seasons platter)
These are hand-rolled meat balls; from left to right - Pork & Mushroom Balls, Prawn Balls, & Fish Balls. My favorite was the pork & mushroom balls as it is more firm compared to the prawn balls. I'm not a great fan of fish balls, but these were pretty good.

Drunken Chicken 花雕酒鸡 (RM15.00/plate)
If you're a fan of chicken with Chinese cooking wine, you MUST have this! The chicken is nicely marinated with the wine & Chinese herbs that you can taste the wine in the meat even after it is cooked in the pork bone broth...wow...thumbs up!

Japanese Black Pork Loin (RM23.00/plate)
SO tender, smooth, & just delectable :) If you haven't tried this before (and you can rarely or never find this in any other shabu-shabu restaurants), you have to try it, even though it's more expensive than the other meats. Quality assured.

Sliced Lamb 特级羊肉片 (RM22.00/plate)
I loved these...thin & best for shabu-shabu.

Sliced Pork Loin 特级猪肉片 (RM22.00/plate)
I prefer the lamb to the pork for the sliced version, but both are still tasty with the broth.

My pot of goodies!
Tasted great - PerutBesi satisfied ;)

Plus One Shabu-Shabu is certainly a place I would recommend for a tasty shabu-shabu meal. You'll get the variety, quality & satisfaction that many other places may not offer :) Plus, it's at 1 Utama, where you've much to shop & see after your scrumptious meal!

Thank you Open Rice Malaysia for a great time during the review!
