Review: The Pork Place, IOI Boulevard Puchong

>> Wednesday, July 29, 2015

Overall comment: Those who love/fancy pork would feel at home at The Pork Place :P The meat is fresh, tasty & tender - yums.
Halal: No

The Pork Place is no stranger to those who live in Puchong as it's located at the IOI Boulevard, one of the more happening places in Pusat Bandar Puchong area. Parking is quite a nightmare here, but for pork-lovers, I doubt any of such concerns would be an obstacle - all for the love of pork!

The Pork Place is like a cafe featuring pork as its main meat that shares its cafe space with Sanbanto, the "pork specialist" that sells all cuts of fresh pork; the pigs are born & bred at a farm in Johor. (Sanbanto has another outlet in SS2, PJ)

The cafe's concept caters to customers from all walks of life & preferences. They have a comfortable dining area at the front, a more cosy setting for those who would like to enjoy their pork with liquor/drinks & also a mezzanine floor for groups who prefer to have their own space/for special occasions.

Bar-like area

Mezzanine area for private functions & larger groups

View from top (mezzanine floor)

Variety of wines

Such 'cute' piggy pictures (and hey, they were showing Chef Ramsay on the tv!)

The Pork Place has 2 sets of menu i.e. their daily menu & a weekend special menu that features the "Hei Zhu"/Black Pig (Berkshire Pig) :D The "Hei Zhu" is more tender as it has more fats spread all over the meat (like marbling on beef), which also makes the meat more juicy & tasty. Oolala...

Let me share with you some of the dishes that we tasted that day:

Pork Bacon Salad (RM21.00/serving)
Crisp romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes & olives topped with cheddar cheese & bacon bits served with our special house-made orange dressing
If you enjoy pork bacon, you'll find that this salad isn't your enemy anymore. Although some people may just chomp down all the bacon, the fresh greens actually compliment the salty bacon very well. Having the orange dressing gives it a zesty, fruity feel, which make the salad far from being boring.

Pork Belly Salad (RM18.90/serving)
Deep-fried pork belly & fresh seasonal local & imported greens tossed in French dressing with lychee.
This was my favorite salad among the 2 that were served. It actually has a "Thai" touch to it as it comes with chopped lemongrass! Really fragrant & having lychee with deep-fried pork belly is just fantastic!

Twirls of Landrace-Duroc (RM 22.80/serving)
A.k.a. pig-in-blanket, meaty meats wrapped in bacon
Very interesting. Actually found it too small to really enjoy the dish in totality, also because 5 of us shared 1 dish! Hahaha. I could eat up this whole dish by myself. It's a starter dish for 1 - a complete, delicious meal with greens & juicy meat, all in one!

Crispy Skin Pork Knuckle (RM69.00 for whole, RM40.00 for halves)
Oven roasted for moist, tender & juicy meat on the inside & a crispy, crunchy skin on the outside
Who doesn't like crispy skin pork knuckle?? I felt the skin could be 'crispier' but the meat was indeed tender & juicy :D

Barbecue Ribs (RM48.00/serving)
Special cut - ribs with belly marinated & cooked in barbecue sauce
Perhaps the best ribs you can find in Puchong? I felt that this was one of the best dish for that day. The ribs were so flavorful, tender (falls off the bone) & felt just like those "glass char siew". Thumbs up! I think I could finish up the whole ribs by myself & have seconds!

Loin Steaks (RM50.00/serving)
Thin & succulent steaks grilled to perfection with onion rings & potatoes with 'wings'
As per the menu's description, these loin steaks were succulent & I have to say that the sides were very appetizing! Elevated the taste of the simple pork loin to the next level.

Collar Steaks (RM68.00/serving)
A cut above the rest with dauphinoise potatoes soaked in rich bone stock
After having so many plates of pork dishes, I felt I was 'saturated' with pork that I couldn't enjoy much of this dish anymore. All I know is that the dauphinoise was really delicious! :D

Best of Bellies (RM65.00/serving)
Juicy chunks of belly pork presented with mash & mushrooms
This was the emperor of dishes. Unfortunately that day's pork belly was SOOOOOOOO fat that it didn't have much meat! It was like 95% fat, 5% meat!! I love the dish on the overall, but I think they really need to serve a more proportionate piece of pork belly so that the customers can enjoy both the fats + meat at the same time. The mashed potatoes, cherry tomatoes & mushrooms complimented the dish really well. LIKE!

If you're in Puchong or just feel like indulging in a pork-filled meal, you have a glaring option here :P

Review: Squid Ink Tempura, Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks

>> Tuesday, July 21, 2015

Halal: Pork free

Introducing the dark side of tempura: squid ink tempura (Chinese:墨魚汁甜不辣)! If you're a fan of squid ink products or you're just curious on how the squid ink tempura tastes like, pop by any outlets of the well-known Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks to satisfy your curiosity. This unique product is only available for a limited period of time in Malaysia & Singapore, from 22nd May 2015 'til the stock runs out.

I tried my 1st squid ink tempura at the 1 Utama (New Wing) outlet. As it's something still relatively new since its launch mid May this year, all customers actually get their tempura freshly fried upon ordering :)

Quoting from the official press release by Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks: "Squid ink has been proven to be rich in iron and antioxidants, and scientists believe that these antioxidants have strong preventive lipid oxidation abilities – a benefit which is in turn possibly linked to a lower risk of heart disease in humans. With such positive findings, the health-conscious can now look beyond their daily greens and opt for black instead. Black is indeed, the new green!"

The freshly deep-fried tempura sticks will be sprinkled with a pinch of fairy dust parsley for added flavor and given a good shake before savoring. The texture is similar to the local "keropok lekor", where it's chewy, savory & has a slightly sweet after-taste alike the squid balls sold at supermarkets.

In conjunction with the launch of the Squid Ink Tempura, Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks is pleased to announce an exclusive “#HeiHeiHey~” promotion beginning 22nd May 2015. Customers who shout “HeiHeiHey~” or "黒黒嘿~" along with any words of their choice (such as “HeiHeiHey~ I want you!”) when ordering the Squid Ink Tempura will be entitled to an immediate discount off their purchase. Customers are also encouraged to post pictures of themselves with their purchases using the official hashtag – #HeiHeiHey.

If you've not tried any squid ink products or this squid ink tempura, "HeiHeiHey ~ Don't miss out this opportunity!"
