Review: Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks' 10th Anniversary

>> Friday, December 6, 2013

Overall comment: Simple & satisfying Taiwanese street snack for people on the go :)
Halal: Yes

Shihlin Taiwanese Street Snack is no foreign name to Malaysians. You'll probably find 1 outlet per shopping mall, not just in the Klang Valley, but also as far as the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

I was invited to a simple review on Shihlin's Taiwanese Street Snack at the 1 Utama outlet in conjunction with the brand's 10th anniversary.  The 1 Utama outlet is a small outlet with decent service & sufficient seating for those who want a simple meal.

The highlight of this review is the new street snack, the Crispy Salt Pepper Mushroom, a delicious and highly addictive dish that comes in five different flavours - Original, Kimchi, Seaweed, Sour Cream, and Wasabi. You'll read more about it below :)

We started our meal with the famous V-Soy soya bean milk, a popular brand name for the thick & smooth soya bean that Shihlin carries at all their outlets. Right after some soy milk, we started with the 'buffet' of food/snacks!

V-Soy Soya Bean Milk (RM2.50/bottle)

A must-try for those who love something soupy & hearty is the oyster mee sua. You'll find the fried handmade mee sua in a thick, flavorful broth (slightly peppery), accompanied by shredded chicken & some juicy oysters! Yums. The oysters are the highlight of this simple dish, but having the dish without the oysters itself is still very tasty (for those who dislike juicy oysters :P). I love the fact that the broth is savoury & slightly sourish (tastes like Worcestershire sauce) + there's 'sambal' to give the whole dish a different dimension & extra "kick"! :D

Handmade Mee Sua with Oysters (RM6.50/bowl)

Rice is a must at most, if not all Asian restaurants/food outlets. Shihlin Taiwanese Street Snack came up with a classic Happy! Rice-box Set. You'll have the all-time favourite XXL Crispy Fried Chicken served with smooth, cold tofu topped with diced century eggs & of course, fluffy short-grained white rice. The tofu is drizzled with a tasty Taiwanese style thick sauce to complete the meal.

Happy! Rice-box Set (RM9.00/set)
I found this set very interesting. It's very "Taiwanese" to have the century egg with tofu & it's my 1st time trying such combination. Not too bad, actually. The entire set has a good mixture of textures & flavour :)

Crispy Floss Egg Crepe (RM6.00/serving)
What better snack than having a whole fried egg that's topped with an imported spring onion crepe that puffs slightly to achieve a somewhat crispy texture. The crepe is then used to wrap generous portions of chicken floss & served with sweet plum sauce. I find this a good side dish/snack when I'm not too hungry, but want something satisfying.

XXL Crispy Chicken (RM6.50/piece)
Here at Shihlin Taiwanese Street Snack, you'll not want to miss out their signature  XXL Crispy Chicken.  The tender & succulent piece of chicken breast with bones is marinated to perfection & coated with a special batter to be deep-fried 'til golden brown. The pieces of chicken is then served piping hot with some oriental spices sprinkled on top for enhanced flavours.

Sweet Plum Potato Fries (RM4.50/serving)
Something rather different from the usual french fries are served here at Shihlin Taiwanese Street Snack: Sweet Plum Potato Fries! The humble sweet potato sticks are deep-fried & sprinkled with sweet plum powder before serving. Quite unique.

'Soft & sweet' sweet potato sticks that's slightly crunchy on the outside :D

Crispy Mushrooms (RM5.50/serving)
The photo below shows the original crispy mushrooms. It's enoki mushrooms that's deep-fried & seasoned with Shihlin's own seasoning. Very crispy & addictive indeed! It's something rather different that you can't find anywhere else (at least not for now!). Those who love crunchy food will LOVE this to bits!

Seaweed-Flavoured Crispy Mushrooms (RM5.50/serving)
You'll find seaweed flakes all over the crispy mushroom & I thought this variant is also quite enjoyable.

There are other flavours as listed above, which I've yet to try. Although it's a "street snack" eatery, it's surely more than just snacks to munch along the way ;)
