Review: Bear Paw Cafe, Kota Damansara

>> Sunday, December 1, 2013

Overall comment: All I can say is that you'll find a juicy patty in a fluffy steamed bun...delicious! :D
Halal: Pork-free

Bear Paw Cafe is no stranger to those who live in the Klang Valley (and yes, even those in Taiwan, of course). Since it started in September last year at Jalan Genting Klang, Bear Paw Cafe is now at its 5th branch (not inclusive of the HQ at Jln Genting Klang) & is soon opening its 6th branch at City Square Johor Bahru!

I was privileged to be invited to the newest branch of Bear Paw Cafe at Kota Damansara recently. This 2-weeks-old branch is strategically located at the heart of Kota Damansara, along the road to one of Giza Mall's entrances.

Parking is indeed a challenge, but with Giza Mall just 3-5 minutes walk down the road, you can just park at Giza Mall for a minimal parking fee & pop-by Bear Paw Cafe for a satisfying "Taiwanese burger meal".

The deco of this outlet is nothing very spectacular to boast about compared to the Subang outlet that I've passed by several times. This outlet has a more "open" concept, so even with the air-condition turned on, it can be slightly warm during the day. Having said that, it's certainly more spacious (at least it does look like it) & comfortable than some of the other branches.

Bear Paw's menu is fairly simple albeit offering a good variety of burgers and rice to satisfy your cravings. For now, they have 3 main types of burger buns i.e. Milk, Whole Wheat, & Brown Sugar, and for a limited period of time, they're also offering the Pumpkin-flavoured buns.

To accompany the burger, they have a substantial variety of meat i.e. chicken ham, fried chicken, fried spicy chicken & fish. Squid-patty will be an up-coming item, but I've yet to hear of its release for ordering ;)

Finish off your burger order with your choice of sauce, from either the usual chili sauce, Thai chili sauce, or even thousand island, tartar, honey mustard & teriyaki! You'll find out my favourite combination below :D

Currently, ordering a meal has been somewhat 'simplified', especially if you want a burger + a drink. The only difference in the value set meals are the types of drinks: Milk Tea, Fresh Tea, Yakult, Sparkling Soda & Fresh Fruit Tea Series. Quite a large variety, I've to admit.

I found it time-consuming as a newbie to pick what I want from the menu where every other thing from the bun to the drink has a list of more than 3 choices to select!

So what did we get to review at this KD branch? Almost the whole menu, I've to say! Let's start with the drinks!

L-R: Passion Fruit Green Tea (RM6.90/cup), Kiwi Fruit Light Oolong Tea (RM7.90/cup), Brown Rice Tea (RM5.90/cup) & Mango Yakult (RM7.90/cup)
All these cups of tea are really evident in the taste & smell of tea, except for the yakult, which isn't a type of tea. I have to say that the Mango Yakult tastes very much like the Indian restaurant's Mango Lassi, but what I love in the simple brown rice tea is the fragrance of 'rice crispies' in the tea :) The passion fruit & kiwi tea are also great choices for those who want some 'bite' in their drinks.

Top-Bottom, Left-Right: Mint Soda (RM5.90/cup), Lemon Yakult (RM7.90/cup), Kiwi Yakult (RM7.90/cup), Green Tea Yakult (RM7.90/cup), Passion Fruit Yakult (RM7.90/cup), & Orange Yakult (RM7.90/cup)
As you can see, the yakult series is very popular. I find it a very nutritious series to have as it helps with the digestion of the food that we ate! Hahaha...

...and now to the burgers!

Here's how the Bear Paw burger bun looks like...so "kiuuuttt"!

My favourite! Brown sugar bun + fried spicy chicken + honey mustard!!
Seriously, when this variant of bun arrived at our table, the whiff of aromatic brown sugar just whet my appetite *drools*
Just imagine this...sweet-fragrance of a warm, fluffy bun...
with crispy fried chicken with some spicy-heat...
& a sweet-sourish honey mustard to balance the taste...
Wah...VELI SYIOK!

Milk bun + chicken ham + thousand island (RM9.90/burger of your choice+meat+sauce)
I found this to be more like a home-made sandwich that I made to bring to school last time! Heeheehee...
I wish the milk taste was more evident like those milk buns from bakeries. I didn't fancy the chicken ham as it lacks 'flavour'; it was rather bland. Can we have pork please....? :D

Whole wheat bun + fried chicken + teriyaki sauce
This was quite a delish combination as well. I think warm, fluffy buns + crispy fried chicken is a match-made-in-heaven! The only wish & comment that I have for the whole wheat bun is that it lacks the 'whole wheat' & 'grainy' feel. I would actually appreciate having more grains/wheat in my bun for a more 'healthy' (or seemingly healthy) choice. The teriyaki sauce is also something different & isn't available at every other burger joint. This, I appreciate :)

Pumpkin bun + fried fish + tartar sauce
When I saw this combination, I thought of my bf & his siblings, how they just dislike pumpkins & also 'fillet-o-fish' at McD's! This is like a BIG no-no combination for them! *lol* But I'm quite sure that it's a combination that my mum would LOVE!

What's not to love about this bun? It's a healthy choice of pumpkin..and fish! Hahaha...It's not my favourite here, but I won't mind having it for a change. We told the owners that if the fish could be thicker, that'll give more "bite" & "volume" to the burger, which would be more satisfying :) Things here need more salt as well!

Aaahh...are you hungry yet? I am! While blogging this, my stomach goes rumbling as I reminisce on the experience that I went through while tasting the different burgers...aaahhhh....hungreeee....

There's more than burgers here as they also offer rice sets (RM12.90/set, which we didn't try). Every rice set comes with a serving of rice + choice of patty (fried chicken, fried spicy chicken or fried fish) + your choice of sauce (Thai, sweet & sour, or Japanese curry)....wait, Japanese curry??! It should be on the burger as well!

This place is certainly suitable for families :)

Apart from the burgers & rice, you can also add RM2.00 for each set purchased to have a serving of either potato wedges or a hash brown. Hmm...not too bad. For max RM16.90++, you'll get a satisfying portion of burger, a drink & some potato snacks. More expensive compared to KFC & McD's, but still acceptable if compared with the other burger joints in the Klang Valley.

After trying out the various buns & meats, we ordered our favourite combination to enjoy it by ourselves! :D

My fav :)

Here's a close-up shot of the bun...can you see the texture...?
I LOVE the brown-sugar bun...it's very "smooth", moist, yet not "wet" like the usual steamed pau! :)

The fried spicy chicken was also juicy (I think they use chicken thigh...my fav part :P)

Bear Paw Cafe will be on my list for yummy burgers. It's not the usual 'grilled beef/pork patty burgers' that you'll get here, but it's certainly something different that I appreciate :)
