Review: 798 Shabu-Shabu, Sunway Pyramid

Overall comment: Substantial variety & comfortable ambiance. Meat is fresh & everything is free-flow ;) Intensity of soup bases could be improved. Time to enjoy your meal + fellowship is limited though...
Halal: No
One of the newer players in the Shabu-Shabu market is the 798 Shabu-Shabu Buffet Restaurant at the Orange Atrium in Sunway Pyramid. You'll spot it from afar although it's kinda hidden behind pillars & walls.
Spacious enough to fit 50 - 60 pax per time
Price per person at this buffet restaurant for lunch is RM29.80++, while for dinner, the cost is RM39.80++. It's a pretty standard price for shabu-shabu buffet, I guess, but you'll really have to eat fast as there's a time-limit (explained below).
Their menu is fairly simple, offering a selection of soup bases, a wide variety of meat & the various sauces to go with your cooked meat.
There are 7 types of meat i.e.:
- Beef slices
- Chicken slices
- Pork slices
- Dori Fish slices
- Lamb slices
- Venison slices
- Abalone slices
9 types of soup bases i.e.:
- "Bak Kut Teh" (only on Mondays + if it's the 'mystery soup of the day')
- Spicy (only on Tuesdays + if it's the 'mystery soup of the day')
- Kimchi (only on Wednesdays + if it's the 'mystery soup of the day')
- Miso (only on Thursdays + if it's the 'mystery soup of the day')
- Winter Melon (only on Fridays + if it's the 'mystery soup of the day')
- Pork Bone Clear Soup
- Tom Yam
- Pepper
- Herbal
Herbal
I personally feel that it's lacking herbs & flavour... :(
Tom Yam
Put in some lemongrass, kaffic lime leaves, onions, chilli, & lime & it'll be a tom yam with a "punch"!
Pork Bone Clear Soup
Too clear that my friend had to make his own "seaweed soup" using the soup base...hahaha...
Winter Melon
This soup felt like an in-between; it doesn't have the sweetness of the winter melon, nor does it have much Chinese herbs.

Unlike other shabu-shabu restaurants, 798 Shabu-Shabu has some terms & conditions applied. Do read up before popping by for your meal. It's similar to those steamboat buffet restaurants, but what I found rather surprising is the time to eat! I can only spend 1 hour & 20 minutes at the restaurant :( Seems like it's not too good an option for a reunion/gathering with family/friends.
Their drinks & ice-cream selection is rather limited & I won't bother much with them. It's nothing fantastic/to shout about. I still feel that the drink that we had at Plus One Shabu-Shabu is WAY better although it's not a buffet restaurant.
Here's what we had that day :)
Front: Beef; Middle: Venison; Back: Pork
Types of meat that we had
Top right clockwise: Chicken, Beef, Venison, Pork, Lamb
I think the nicest is the lamb, followed by pork & chicken. The beef is also good, but the venison was kinda tough :S
Abalone & Fish Slices
This is a rare item to find at a Shabu-Shabu buffet! :D How about having some "abalone" slices in your soup? ;)
Loads of mushrooms!
Assortment of balls...
Noodles & more
My combination of sauces as dips
The sesame & peanut sauce is pretty tasty & same goes the green chilli dip :)
At the end of the lunch meal, we were all quite stuffed. This 798 Shabu-Shabu Restaurant will certainly be a hit among family & friends after shopping or to energize themselves before going on their shopping spree!
Try it out for yourself to find out ;)

I think they are not the only one who have time limit. But then again, do they really have a counter timer for each table? Hhmm...
