Trip to the US: Lunch at California Cafe, Los Gatos

>> Monday, June 10, 2013

Los Gatos is the next town from where I stayed in Palo Alto. Since we were in an adventurous mood that day, my colleague & I decided to take a drive down to the next town to check out for ourselves how that town is like & what we could find there.

It's a typical American small town, with not much traffic, small shops, & I have to mention that the weather on that day was REALLY terrific! I love spring!

Lovely rose bushes around the "Old Town" area where California Cafe is situated

We were introduced to this place called "California Cafe" by one of the workers at Cooper-Garrod, who so graciously recommended some good lunch places nearby. This place is simple & it's probably a place where I will not regret coming :) Food & ambiance were good!

There are 2 areas where you can enjoy your brunch, lunch, or dinner i.e. inside the restaurant, where it's warmer & cozier, or outside, where it's more sunny, but air-ventilation is certainly better.

Lovely view
I have to say that the view on the outside (albeit kinda sunny to be out) was lovely. The full-bloom flowers, yellow umbrellas, & gentle breeze/wind blowing....ah, a harmony of colors & "feel".

Simple menu
There's practically only 1 sheet of food & another sheet for drinks. You can even ask for their recommendations & they will gladly recommend their best-sellers to you.

One of my favourite photos of the trip :)
The colour combinations + lighting....NICE!

Complimentary snacks/starters
Everywhere we go, we will be served a basket of complimentary bread. Here at California Cafe, we were served not just the usual plain bread with olive oil vinaigrette, but we were served with a LARGE plate of crispy buns, biscuits, & cakes with fragrant butter. The assortment was nicely flavoured with cinnamon & brown sugar - two of my favourite things as well! :D

This was the best item! *crunch*

Fish Tacos (USD11.50/serving)
We ended up ordering a serving of fish tacos for sharing since we weren't VERY hungry. Knowing that the serving sizes are larger than what we get here in Malaysia, we shared most of the dishes wherever we go. The fish fillets were crunchy & slightly sourish, with fresh lime squeezed on top of it to give the simple dish a "kick". The guacamole went well with the tacos as well :)

Bowl of Spring Onions Soup (USD7.00/serving)
This was something interesting & different. I've never had "cream of spring onions" - the only similar dish that I had was the french onion soup, but this one tasted quite different. The soup was served with some crispy strands of leeks & potatoes as well, if I'm not mistaken. Delicious!

I will certainly recommend this place for a nice meal in a serene & relaxing ambiance. It's kinda expensive for a Malaysian & the food here may not be highly unique, but it's a place where most people would not be disappointed :)
