Review: Ploy's New Menu Specials 2013

>> Wednesday, May 1, 2013

Overall comment: Unique & delicious food in petite portions.
Halal: Pork-free; alcohol is served

Once again, Ploy brings its diners on a modern & unique journey through a more Japanese-touch menu. You'll rarely/never find their type of dishes elsewhere as the team at Ploy comes up with the most unique Japanese & Thai-style dishes with a modern twist every now & then.

This time around, we were introduced to some of their newest "members" to the year 2013's menu...

Golden Needle Salad (RM15.00/serving)
Tofu with Avocado, Broccoli & Wafu Dressing
Slightly sourish & savory, this salad is actually very appetizing. It feels very healthy too since it's full of greens & tofu with just a small handful of deep-fried golden mushrooms on the top! Noms :D

Tuna Wakeme Salad (RM23.00/serving)
Tuna Cube, Avocado & Sesame Shoyu Dressing
This was my favorite among the 2 salads as it has seaweed! The dressing is slightly spicy though...more like pepperish + savory. If I wasn't informed of the ingredients, from far, the red cubes actually resemble cubes of watermelon! But to my delight, they were chunky cubes of fresh tuna...yum yum! An assortment of textures in a salad - I like :)

Smoothies: Ploy Bonanza (RM16.00/serving)
Kiwifruit, bananas, mixed berries & orange
Looks good! But as I didn't fancy having bananas in my drink for that night, I didn't order this...

 Smoothies: Tropic Thunder (RM16.00/serving)
Pineapple, bananas, orange & coconut syrup
According to Jerry, this didn't taste very nice. The coconut syrup made the drink taste weird somehow...hmm...acquired taste?

Smoothies: Cool Cucumber Melon (RM16.00/serving)
Cucumber, honeydew, passion fruit, mint leaves
It certainly didn't look cucumberish/honeydewish...I had the assumption that it would look green, but it turned out pink! Where did that color come from?? Anyway...you can taste the cucumber for sure, but the other elements were kinda subtle..I wish the taste of mint & passion fruit/peach were stronger!

Chef Daniel Yong explaining the dishes...

Kabocha Tempura (RM8.50/serving)
Salted Egg Pumpkin Tempura
This dish is SO alike the ones you can find at most Chinese restaurants. The only difference is that Ploy uses tempura batter. It's slightly different from the Chinese-style salted egg pumpkins as the salted eggs here isn't as "wet"/"mushy".

Tempura Surprise (RM15.00/serving)
Seabass wrapped in Oba Leaf
I couldn't really taste the Oba leaf nor much of the seabass since the pieces were really small. It's like nibbling on fish ball-sized pieces of fish...the orangy sauce is something like spicy mayo...goes well with the fried tempura fish, but it could over-power the fresh-taste of the fish.

Crab in a Wrap (RM28.00/serving)
Soft Shell Crab wrapped with Mango, Avocado with Spicy Kani
One of the best dishes for the night. It's something that you may find at Japanese restaurants, but Ploy does this just as well. The only thing that was quite surprising was that the mayo was the spicy mayo! Hmm....interesting.

Magic Puff (RM32.00/serving)
Homemade Crispy Pastry with Goat Cheese, Truffle Oil and Wild Rocket
I was expecting to find something inside the puff, but it "magically disappeared"! Goat cheese + truffle oil + wild rockets + cherry tomatoes made the top of the slightly savory & cripsy puff, oh-so-fragrant & "earthy"! Loved this! Wish it had some fillings though :P

Smoked Duck Breast with Chicken Ham Pizza (RM28.00/serving)
Ducks and Chicken do get along especially on our Ployzas!
Thin-crust pizza alike a piece of tortilla. It's smothered with mashed avocados & the flavor is elevated by the smoked duck breast & chicken ham. Thumbs up!

Pasta From Heaven (RM28.00/serving)
Sakura Ebi Angel Hair in Truffle Oil
Simple dish for those who just want a simple yet delish pasta. Texture-wise, there's not much to chew on since it's only angel-hair pasta with crispy baby shrimps.

The Godfather Special (RM22.00/serving)
Salmon Don with Ikura, Avocado, Royu and Nori in Tempura Flakes
I'm not really a rice person, but I prefer this to the pasta! I guess the chunks of salmon & avocados did the trick...feels so healthy...oh, but this dish came also with the spicy mayo! Feels a bit Thai here with the spicyness...hmmm....

Dessert: Creme Caramel
Sweet, yet not OVERLY sweet 'til you don't wanna have another spoonful. The texture was just nice - not too soft, not too firm...it was still slightly wobbly, yet firm. Fragrant :)

Dessert: Durian Panna Cotta
Lovely "Musang King" durian panna cotta! According to chef Daniel, no other durians would give this panna cotta the texture that is currently has - wobbly, yet firm. Seriously, it's like jelly when you move the plate! But it's firm like a jello that has bits of durians in it! *faints* To die for....SO GOOD! They even use the durian seeds to get most out of the durians!

Dessert: Sticky Date Pudding
I'm not a fan of dates nor am I a fan of toffee. This dessert is REALLY sweet...I couldn't take it although it is quite fragrant for a dessert.

You've gotta try it out for yourself to experience what I've experienced. If you ever dine at Ploy, remember to try the Durian Panna Cotta. You won't be able to find anything else that's SO "KAO" of durians in a small little panna cotta ;)

@Sycookies: Yeap, they've rather playful/"ployful" names :) Food is good, but it's kinda costly for the portion served...semi fine-dining style.

@Amparo: Try it to find out for yourself if you like it! :)
