Fat Boy's @ Publika

>> Monday, March 4, 2013

I've been missing-in-action since my last post! Work is as usual busy (getting busier!) & I've also been occupied with other commitments. I've loads of blog posts coming up, so look out for more food-news! :D
*****

Overall comment: Yummilicious burgers...considerably affordable/worth-eating as well! You'll find my final verdict below ;)
Halal: No

Burger joints have been mushrooming in Klang Valley. Fat Boy's have been around for slightly over a year (since last Feb 2012), but I've never tried it 'til last week. I need to be more adventurous with food! - - meaning I will need to save up more cash to spend a little bit more as well :S

This burger joint is quite cosy & is pretty popular among students & young working adults. You'll find all sorts of burgers here, from the common beef & chicken, to lamb & even pork! *yums* Prices of their burgers are still acceptable (for PerutBesi) since the portion is quite generous :)

The menu...
So cute...each variant of burger is represented by an animal to indicate if it's beef/chicken/pork/lamb/vegetarian.

Create your own burger!
You can also opt to create your own burger :) As a "newbie" to Fat Boy's, I opted for their standard burgers  rather than creating my own. It's slightly cheaper to have the "off the rack" burgers as well compared to custom-making your burger.

Drinks menu...

They serve desserts as well...
Yes to try 'em...

Our order
All burgers come with a generous helping of thick-cut fries + a slice of tomato + some lettuce leaves. Prices of burgers start from RM16.00 onwards

Bolly Wooly (RM18.00/serving)
Juicy lamb patty, lettuce, tomato, smothered with homemade curry remoulade and mango chutney on honey oat bun.
As its name speaks, this is an interesting lamb burger, which we felt was a tad too sweet. Having some slighty curry taste to the burger isn't too odd, but to have the sweet mango chutney (quite a lot of it!) felt over-powering to the supposedly "tastes-good-on-its-own" lamb burger. Oh, the patty's kinda "well done", so it could be better if it was really "medium well" as they were supposed to be.

I actually still prefer the lamb burger at Vin's!
Ah, I miss that lamb burger...so different...so good!

Wimpy (RM19.00/serving)
Half of the Fat Basterd (choice of double patties - pork/beef/lamb, streaky bacon, cheddar cheese, fried egg, and homemade Fat Boy's BBQ sauce on sesame bun) but the bestest selling burger just yet!
This is the "smaller version" of their well-known Fat Basterd! the big brother, Fat Basterd, comes with double patty for RM28.00/serving, while this "little Wimpy" comes with just a single patty. Looking at the thickness of the patty, I think a double would be too much for a meal! This is one good burger :D My fav...

Mahalo (RM18.50/serving)
Bacon stuffed pork patty, caramelized onions, grilled pineapples, Mozzarella, & creamy mayo on sesame bun.
It's so filling that you may struggle to finish up the entire platter of burger + fries + veggie!

Jamaican Me Hungry (RM19.00/serving)
Jerk, seasoned bacon stuffed pork patty, topped with bacon, sundried tomatoes, coleslaw & smothered with mayonnaise on sesame bun.
Looks like a good classic burger :) If you like your burger moist, this would be a good choice since it has coleslaw! ;)

What I had...half a Wimpy, half a Bolly Wooly :D
Best of both worlds! I shared with another colleague & we managed to try out both. The verdict? Wimpy wins! Bolly Wooly's a tad too sweet & the patty's a tad dry as well. I reckon it's "over-cooked"...it needs to be really medium well! It's a bit too "well" already...

Comparing Fat Boy's burgers with Burgerlab's...

Price: Fat Boy's wins (Wimpy = RM19.00 with fries, Beef Beautiful Mess = RM18.00 without fries/add RM6.00 for fries + bottomless drink)
Portion: Both are comparable, but I think Fat Boy's is slightly thicker.
Taste: Very subjective...Burgerlab's bun is more unique & the patty is more juicy/oily compared to Fat Boy's. But Fat Boy's serves pork burgers, which Burgerlab doesn't!
Variety: There's slightly more variety at Fat Boy's, but Burgerlab changes their menu every other week as well! If you want something "new" or different at every visit, go for Burgerlab's. If you want something more predictable & "you'll-always-get-it-at-any-time-of-the-day", go for Fat Boy's.
Service: I think it's faster & more comfortable at Fat Boy's since Burgerlab's restaurant size is smaller & service is slower. You'll also end up smelling like a burger if you dine-in at Burgerlab, when it does not happen to you at Fat Boy's. Ventilation is better :)
Parking: As Fat Boy's is at Publika, parking isn't too much a problem; just that you'll need to pay. Burgerlab is located at a housing area, so parking can sometimes be a challenge. But if you get a space, you won't need to pay ;)
Business hours: You can get Fat Boy's for breakfast, lunch, AND dinner/supper, but you'll only get Burgerlabfor dinner!

Our bill at Fat Boy's

My verdict: I prefer Fat Boy's for their variety & the availability of pork burgers, but I also enjoy Burgerlab's juicy beef/chicken burgers WITH portobello mushrooms! Of course, if I were to compare prices, I think it's more "economical" to go for Fat Boy's instead of Bugerlab :) Don't put roadside/Ramli burgers into this equation yea? :P

I think I've been to Fat Boy's more than MyBurgerLab. Perhaps, it's due to the factors you've listed. Hehe. :P

@Chong: Seems like I'm not the only one who prefers Fat Boy's for the reasons stated...I still like Burgerlab's but for the wait & price...I can skip that :P
