Backofen @ Desa Sri Hartamas

Overall comment: Pretty good food at affordable prices (and generous portion) for a bakery cum cafe :) Having said that, they still have much room for improvement for their cooked meals.

Halal: Yes

Cheap & good food are rare gems. When it comes to evaluating dishes, I will always look at several important factors:
1. taste
2. portion
3. price!

I'm realistic, okay....these days where prices of food are soaring faster than the stock market & almost not-justifiable compared to the crawling salary increment that we have (or what increment??!), the hunt for good, pocket-friendly food is the in-thing to do! Backofen has been around for a long time. Located at Desa Sri Hartamas, right opposite my cousin's shop i.e. That Special Occasion, above Guardian Pharmacy, this bakery cum cafe has been a popular hang-out place for people of all walks of life! Apparently, their set meals are a hit; same goes their breakfast sets/bread.

As I was here on a Sunday, we had to order ala carte & had to even wait to be seated - it was full house around 1:30pm! AC said that their grilled lamb chop & pasta are his favourites, so we decided to trust his recommendations.

Grilled Lamb (RM18.00/serving)
This has become another of our signature dish! Grilled lamb shoulder marinated in Backofen's special sauce. Served with crumbed potatoes. A must try.
I'm quite surprised at the portion for the price paid. We were served at least 6 x "Ruth's palm size" (3 inches x 4 inches) pieces of lamb! "Makan sampai kenyang!" The taste was also pretty good - alike mushroom/brown sauce. The texture of the meat could be better if it was not "well done". I found it a bit "over-cooked", so it was a tad dry.

Olive Oil Fried Spaghetti (RM13.00/serving)
Fresh mushrooms & garlic sauteed with olive oil. A simple & tasty spaghetti dish.
It's true that it's simple & tasty - well seasoned & the texture of the spaghetti was just nice :) A light, yet filling meal! Erm...kinda all carbs though :P

Viennese Beef Goulash/Wiener Rindsgulasch (RM16.00/serving)
A traditional Austrian recipe of classic stew of tender beef chunks, cooked in savoury sauce. A Backofen signature. Served with our very own wheat bread, spaghetti or rice.
It was certainly NOT love at first sight. It looks like a "pathetic plate of beef rendang" with just SIX pieces of beef chunks! Oh come on....presentation for this failed. If you're gonna serve just those 6 pieces of meat, put it in a bowl! At least it won't look so....SAD! It would have looked much more appealing...put some herb as garnish as well! The taste is alright, but it's a far cry from the "actual" Austrian beef goulash that I had at Impiana KLCC Hotel. This one felt too "thick" & "tomato-ish". It's too "paste-y". The bonus is that the meat chunks were tender & the wheat bread was soft & VERY filling.

So will I recommend this place? Yea, why not...parking may be quite a challenge on any other day, but the prices of food + taste + portion is still acceptable. I won't mind going there again, but it will not be my 1st choice though...heehee...

Went there once. Had their Chicken Stroganoff Spaghetti. It was tasteless and the chicken was dry. Didn't even manage to finish 1/3 of plate. Might go back there for their meaty mains but definitely not their pasta dishes...

@Chong: Yikes! You should have complained & asked to have it changed! I would have done that...the pasta that we had that day was alright wor...the lamb chop was a tad dry, but it's still acceptable. Perhaps I'm not as particular or the chefs had a bad day when you popped by? :S

You said its Halal.. But how come when I wanted to order the Ceaser Salad it says comes with bits of bacon

@Anonymous: That should be beef bacon, so don't worry. Many of our Malay friends go over for lunch.
