Is Madam Kwan's Really That Nice?

>> Friday, January 11, 2013

Overall comment: Taste of food was actually quite decent, but I felt the prices are quite high..
Halal: Yes

After a heavy meal for lunch that day, we actually ended the day with dinner at Madam Kwan's at Bangsar Shopping Centre - it was another heavy meal! *sigh* How to not gain weight/loss weight with the load of food in a day??

Anyway, many have been talking about Madam Kwan's. With its tagline, "Truly Malaysian Cuisine", this is probably one of the better places to bring your overseas colleagues to try out an array of Malaysian cuisine in an air-conditioned place! Be prepared to pay at least twice more than at hawker centres, but that's the price you pay for the ambiance & environment.

Madam Kwan's at BSC
Ample space for large groups.

Deep-Fried Dumplings
Actually, the dumplings aren't all that great. I've had better deep-fried dumplings at cheaper prices!

Chicken Satay
These were actually quite good. The meat were tender & pretty well flavoured. However, it lacks the tumeric taste & colour, plus that "burnt" smell & taste that you find in those authentic charcoal-grilled satay! I feel that's what makes satay good :D This satay gravy wasn't too bad either, but I still miss the one from Satay Zul in Kuantan!

Stir-Fried Kangkung with Belacan
It's quite delicious, but it still lacks "wok hei" that you'll only find at Chinese "dai chow" restaurants!

Sambal Petai
Eat if you dare...this "smelly beans" really make your "output" smelly as well! But I can testify that it's "oh so yummy"! :D

Fried Kuey Teow
I still think that coffeeshops serve better char kuey teow :D

Nasi Lemak Kari Ayam
Portion isn't very large, but good enough to finish & keep you full. No complaints, except that the price is REALLY expensive la. Almost RM20.00 for a plate of nasi lemak with chicken curry when you can get something probably better at other shops for less than half the price :S

Nasi Bojari
This one costs more than RM20.00, but it fed 2 of us & kept us satisfied. You'll get a whole chicken leg (thigh + drumstick), sambal prawns, & beef rendang with the special rice itself. You'll also get half an egg...hahaha...taste is quite nice, but it's quite costly.

So, is Madam Kwan's really that nice? Hmm...I would say it is nice. However, when I consider the price, portion & the overall taste, I would say that I could get something similar if not better elsewhere for less than what I need to pay at Madam Kwan's.

It's a good place for a slightly better environment, but if you're going purely for the food, hit the streets! :D
