Highlights of Food & Fun in Penang
>> Monday, December 31, 2012
Trips to Penang & Ipoh with the family are more often for the food than the sight-seeing. There were a couple of places that I re-visited, while some were new-found places :) On the overall, our 5 days 4 nights trip to Penang & Ipoh was a good one. There were ups & downs, no doubt, but I thank God for family & time together.
Here are some highlights of our trip to Penang:
Must try - Chee Cheong Fun with Prawn-Peanut Paste at Genting Cafe, Greenlane
(RM2.00/small portion of 2 chee cheong fun, RM3.00/large portion of 3 chee cheong fun - photo below shows a large portion). You may have to queue up for 15 - 20 minutes to get your plate of chee cheong fun! For more information on this place, you may refer to my previous blog post here.
Another must-try - Hokkien Mee/Prawn Mee at Sin Kim Sun coffeeshop on Macalister Road
This stall is only opened for breakfast or maybe lunch. A bowl of normal prawn mee costs RM4.00 - RM5.00, while the special prawn mee with additional deep-fried mantis prawns, roast pork, & pork ribs costs RM7.00/bowl. It's flavourful!
Good Banana-Leaf Rice - No Shop Name!
For banana leaf rice with dried chicken curry, we spent only RM20.20 that fed FOUR persons 'til we're SO satisfied! You'll find this small shop on Lebuh Acheh/Armenian beside Chiat Cheong Sdn Bhd. It's quite a humble & authentic banana leaf rice shop :)
Assam Laksa, Satay, & Loads of Good Food at Goodall Cafe, Jalan Gottlieb
From what we've tried, below are the best food dishes. The Mee Rebus & Orh Chien weren't good, so don't bother trying.
Going places in Penang
See if you can go to all the 30 sites for the sculptures/paintings around Penang city centre. I only managed to go to 22 places...8 more to go! I'll finish it the next time I'm there :D We also visited various places around the Penang heritage area & Fort Cornwallis (just the outside). We got sun-burnt thanks to lovely weather!!
The one place that I would really want to share with all my readers is the Bukit Genting Cafe at Balik Pulau, Penang. I reckon not many people are aware of this place, & it's probably a good thing, but if you're really keen to go on an "adventure", this may be a place that would interest you.
The road up to Bukit Genting Cafe is very steep. You'll have to head to Balik Pulau area & watch out for a small signboard on your left that turns up to the restaurant. It's alike the Ampang Lookout Point, but better :) The journey up to the hill top can be rather scary, especially if you're driving a big car or if you're a new driver. However, once you're up there, the view is just breath-taking! You'll see more photos on my Facebook page.
This was the best dish of the night: Thai Green Curry Chicken (RM16.00/medium serving)
It's fragrant, quite spicy, & the chicken pieces are a plenty! Thumbs up!
Surprisingly good: Stir-Fried Kangkung Thai Style (RM10.00/medium serving)
It's slightly different from the usual kangkung belacan. It's not so spicy, but slightly sweet, yet the vegetable wasn't over-cooked. Nice!
Good Steamed Fish: Pae Sai (RM31.00/fish - market price)
Fresh siakap, steamed to perfection with chilli, parsley & loads of garlic - it has a sweet, sour, spicy, & savoury taste. Very appetizing :)
Slightly Disappointing Tom Yam Seafood (RM22.00/medium serving)
We were slightly disappointed by this dish as it was too sweet although quite spicy. The level of sour-ness wasn't at its "optimum" as well, so the entire dish didn't taste very balanced.
Stuffed Omelette Thai-Style (RM10.00/medium serving)
If you're not a fan of sweet saucey omelette with mixed vegetables, please do not order this. We had a hard time finishing this dish & we kinda regretted trying this out since it's something 'new' to us :P
Tab Tim Krob (RM2.00/serving)
It's not the best although quite refreshing. I still miss the one at Moo Kata, on Lorong Burma, opposite the Thai temple.
This place is a must-try for the experience of a good view & decent Thai food. It's quite an adventure to get there & to get out of that place...hahaha. If you're not familiar with Penang roads, it'll even be a greater adventure for you (just like how it was for me)!
I'll be posting up another post on the Ipoh trip, most probably tomorrow (1st day of the new year 2013)! Thank you for your support towards The Ruthless Eater @ PerutBesi & have a greater year 2013 ahead!
