Restoran Double Luck, Ranau

>> Wednesday, August 1, 2012

Overall comment: Simple dishes, but really costly! All thanks to Lonely Planet's website, where this restaurant was recommended (they didn't mention how expensive is "not the cheapest in town" *sobs*). If you're in Ranau, I reckon it may be better to just eat mixed/economy rice than to order dishes + rice.
Halal: No

We were at Ranau & Kundasang during Day 3 of our KK trip. Our only aim was to enjoy the view of Mount Kinabalu & all things natural. We didn't really research on food around that area, so at the very last minute, we got online (in the car) using our phones & tried searching for some "good" place for lunch.

The only site which provided some "promising" information on food in Ranau was Lonely Planet. Apparently the food at this place called Double Luck was good, although the website indicated that the food isn't the cheapest in town. Hmm...we went round & round the small town, trying to find that restaurant. This is what happens when no proper address is provided in a website! Bah.

Anyway, we found it after rounding the area for almost 15 minutes. It's near CIMB Bank & it's a corner coffeeshop - quite easily spotted once you see CIMB Bank. Not knowing what's good (since Lonely Planet didn't tell us much), we just ordered randomly.

Curry Wildboar (RM16.00/serving)
Quite tasty, but when we saw the price, we were quite surprised as well. Since it's wild boar, we gave it a pass & didn't make a big fuss...

Stir-Fried Choy Sum (RM14.00/serving)
For this, we made a GREAT fuss! When the veggie was placed on the table, we stared at it in disbelief & somewhat "disgust". How come it's just the branches??! Ergh...I don't really fancy choy sum branches. The color wasn't the most appetizing either, but thank goodness it was crunchy & surprisingly quite sweet. We finished it nevertheless, only to be even more thankful when we saw the price on the bill! Oh, come on....RM14 for a SMALL plate of veggie???!

Stir-Fried Japanese Beancurd with Minced Meat (RM12.00/serving)
We waited more than TWENTY MINUTES for this dish to arrive. We pretty much wanted to just leave, but the boss then told us to wait while he checks, & he came out of the kitchen informing us that his chef said there was no more beancurd, so he just went to get it from I-don't-know-where. "It's on the way...cooking already....sorry ya...wait a while more...my chef didn't inform you...." Imagine Godzilla over-turning tables...we wanted to do that at that time! When the dish arrived, we quickly ate without much expectations (nothing special at all) & asked for the bill. No more. You won't see me here for their stir-fries.

There are many people lining up for the mixed/economy rice at Double Luck, but I guess that's about it. We certainly didn't get any "luck", what more "double luck". We're probably "lucky" enough to have sufficient cash to pay for this expensive meal after spending quite a bit for other travel & food expenses! Bleagh...I'm not gonna dine here another time...
