Swee Choon Dim Sum, Singapore

>> Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Overall comment: Good dim sum to satisfy your midnight cravings! Haha...their business hours is quite interesting - late night 'til early morning.
Halal: No

This place is worth mentioning. I arrived in Singapore around 9:30p.m. last Thursday & my lovely hosts GN & YH brought me to my 1st meal near Bugis area (no idea what area it's called). There's practically no MRT nearby & you can only get there by car/taxi/bus. The nearest MRTs will require you to take a 20 minutes walk to get to this restaurant.

I think it's my 1st time having dim sum in Singapore...or at least my 1st time having it at such a time of the day. I usually won't bother eating supper & what more dim sum for supper? Interesting. Not many mamaks or none here at sight, but Singaporeans go for noodles, rice, & dim sum for supper instead.

One of their many signature dishes is the "Mee Suah Kueh", which looks like a pan-fried radish/carrot cake, but it uses mee suah instead :) It tastes LOVELY!

Clockwise from left: Mee Suah Kueh, Deep-Fried Banana & Prawn Rolls, Xiao Long Bao, Loh Mai Kai
The only good stuff in this photo are the mee suah kueh & the xiao long bao. The loh mai kai is quite bad & gave YH indigestion that he threw up the next day (yeah, super slow reaction...ahahaha) & the prawn & banana roll wasn't very special somehow.

The place opens at my so-called ungodly hour from 6p.m. - 10a.m. I wonder how's the crowd like in the wee hours of the morning...

Even at the time when we arrived there, around 10+p.m., the place was packed! As with everywhere else in Singapore, we had to line up =.=" I can't believe it that I'm lining up for dim sum...I thought to myself, "This better be good & worth the wait."

Smooth & butterish salted egg yolk oozing out
The other excellent dish is the "Liu Sha Bao". Super yummy! The salted egg yolk paste literally oozes out of the soft steamed buns. Ah, bliss! According to GN, this is one of the best she has ever tried in SG! The best part is the "suck" the paste before it drips off the buns! :D

Clockwise from left: YH pouring tea, Pan-Fried Radish/Carrot Cakes (Lo Bak Ko), & Steamed Prawn Dumpling (Ha Gao)
The lo bak ko is alright, but the ha gao was a disappointment. To me, a good dim sum place should have good ha gao & siu mai to the very least. Well, this place has other more "interesting" items on their menu to survive & be redeemed, I reckon.

I guess you'll have to line up at any time of the day. Parking there is also quite challenging. So if you're there or have tried this place before, do share with me your thoughts. Do share if you've found an even better place for dim sum!

I certainly won't mind heading there again for their Mee Suah Kueh & Liu Sha Bao. I would want to try out their other signature dishes as well! Next trip, next trip :D Who wants to come with me?
