Home Made Fish Head Noodle, Mid Valley

>> Friday, April 20, 2012

Overall comment: Decent fish head noodles although prices are slightly higher due to the location.
Halal: Yes

My colleagues & I were at Mid Valley one day for lunch & one of my colleagues suggested to have lunch at this place. I've never had fish head noodles at Mid Valley & would never have thought of having it, but I'm quite a sucker for such noodles - I HAD to try it. The most important "element" for a good fish head noodle, in my humble opinion, is the soup - whether or not is has the "kick"/umph! I'll usually request for additional wine to be added into my soup :D

Apparently, Home Made Fish Head Noodle has 3 branches: Mid Valley, SS15 Subang, & Kota Damansara. I'm SO ignorant towards such mushrooming outlets; I think I've slowly evolved into a somewhat lazy, ignorant, & habitual creature :S

Ms Soo's 3-layers-tea

This restaurant offers a wide variety of fish head/paste mee hoon & they even go to the extend of serving the same soup with yee mee! Erm...I've yet to pick up my courage to try that out. If you're not a noodles fan, there's also porridge & rice of all sorts!

Here's what we ordered:

Mr Tan's Fish Paste Mee Hoon with XO Sauce (RM11.80/bowl)
I didn't realize the soup would be slightly spicy & has so much more oil compared to the normal fish paste noodles. You can taste a bit of the XO sauce, but I think it's not that generous. Mr Tan found the taste slightly peculiar...but I felt it was still acceptable to my palatte.

Ms Soo's/Cham's/Ma's Fish Head Mee Hoon (RM9.80/bowl)
Soup is pretty fragrant; milkish & slightly sourish because of the tomatoes & salted/pickled vegetables ("ham choy"). The fish pieces were also nicely deep-fried to give it a slight crisp on the outside.

My Fish Head Mee Hoon with XO Sauce (RM11.80/bowl)
As you can see, it resembles a curry laksa. I was quite surprised when I first saw it...and wasn't very excited as well. But thank goodness it tasted alright. I still prefer the usual fish head noodles at the Shangri-la coffeeshop at Jalan Batai near office & the Wing Soon one in Puchong. Feel more "authentic".

If you're craving for some good noodles (and maybe rice) while at Mid Valley, I think this is a good option compared to other restaurants in the mall. The crowd here during office lunch hour can be crazy though...best to be there earlier to get a seat, else you'll just have to wait outside & waste some time waiting just to get your meal.

I prefer fish paste over fish head. Not a big fan of fish bones. Hehe. And surprisingly, the price is pretty alright for places like this.

@Chong: I'm not a great fan of fish bones as well...but on that very day, I just thought of ordering the fried fish variant as it would be more fragrant compared to the "safe-for-consumption" fish paste! :P
