Venue: Restoran Fu Kua, SS23, Taman S.E.A., PJ
Occasion: Lunch with CO
Overall comment: A VERY interesting experience & one that made us want to stay away from bittergourd for at least a couple of weeks. We just HAD an overdose of bittergourd...
Halal: No

It was truly an experience both of us will never forget...ahahaha...not in a bad way, though, but this experience surely made a lasting impression in our minds!

CO & I went on our 1st "lunch date" since the day we met & became buddies. She's posted to TMCPJ for her practical, so we had the opportunity to cross paths & spend some girls-lunch-out together. After some chit-chats & getting to know that both of us kinda like bittergourd, we decided to try out the one place where every bittergourd-lover will head to: Restoran Fu Kua.

I was introduced to this restaurant by another church friend, Nick, who said that the bittergourd here ain't bitter. He's SO wrong! It's either his tolerance towards bitter food is higher than mine, or I just have a lower tolerance towards the bittergourds served here. Perhaps it's also seasonal/depending on the dishes ordered...I really have no idea.

This restaurant is located near the LDP, right behind the Taman Megah Specialist Centre & Cash Converters. As you turn into the area, you will definitely not miss out the HUGE signboard with the restaurant's name. The entire shop is green too, so who can miss it, eh? Coincidentally, the day we had lunch here was the day the anti-Lynas protest i.e. "Perhimpunan Hijau 2.0" went on in Kuantan. It's WEAR-GREEN DAY! I happen to wear green too & somehow the whole restaurant was filled with people wearing green as well! (workers wear a green t-shirt as their uniform :P)

One thing that I couldn't stand about the restaurant is their MENU! Oh come on...not ALL words guar??! There were at least 5 pages (front & back) with small fonts words all over their menu! No clear categorization, some items without the price stated, & how I wish there were at least SOME photos....*sigh*

The Drink Test
I courageously ordered a bittergourd & honey (yeah, not THAT courageous after all, huh? heehee...) drink, while CO ordered a chrysanthemum & bittergourd drink. Extremely strange combination, but seriously, EVERYTHING has bittergourd in it...CO even ate up ALL the bittergourd pieces in her drink! *hats off* We paid around RM2.50 - RM3.50 each for our drinks...

The Food Test
As there were only 2 of us, we decided to just have a rice + veg + fish. Since the menu was terribly confusing, we resulted to utilizing the "walking & talking menu" a.k.a. waiter, to the fullest! We ended up ordering a bittergourd fried rice (I still prefer my rice with french/long beans! plus, this was a 'lil too bland for my liking), stir-fried bittergourd + celery (overloaded with bittergourd + a stick or 1.5 sticks of celery), & a so-called red snapper fish with bittergourd, which turned out to be some "chicken red fish". We thought it would be a steamed fish instead of a deep-fried one! How disappointing :( We wanted to try out something different...steamed fish with bittergourd would be unique & we were quite eager to try that out...this one resembled the stir-fried chicken with bittergourd in bean sauce.

Will I go there again? Perhaps, perhaps...but it will certainly not be in my list of favourites! The total bill came up to almost RM60.00 for the 2 of us. The fish costs around RM33.00 already, which was what we felt as over-priced for a rather "thin" fish. I reckon it would be good to NOT have too many dishes with bittergourd in the same meal. My greatest mistake was to order a bittergourd drink as well! Oh, the overly-adventurous me :S

What a "bitter" experience...thankfully, the fellowship/chit-chat was really good (not bitter at all)!

If you're a fan of bittergourd, try this place out for yourself & do share your experiences with me! ;)

C&C: Oh yes, no doubt good for health! But it was really too much for a meal...1 or 2 dishes with bittergourd's fine, but more than that, I felt really jelak & everything tasted pretty much the same d! Hahahaha...
