Popiah & Dumpling Party

>> Monday, June 6, 2011

It's on rare occasions like today that we get to have home-made popiah (spring rolls) for dinner. The load of work & effort to cut & prepare the ingredients is quite amazing...my aunts conquered! *standing ovation!*

My family don't really "celebrate" the Dumpling Festival a.k.a. Dragon Boat Festival. Unlike my China colleagues who have several days off work to celebrate this festival, Malaysians have no such "luxury". My family will just gather during such Chinese festivals for a simple meal cum catch-up session since everyone lives everywhere & we rarely meet up during non-festive seasons.

This time around, we had a popiah & giant dumpling party! *yums*

Nutritious popiah dinner!
Ingredients: Turnip, cucumber, lettuce, beancurd, Chinese waxed sausages, shrimp, french beans, beansprout, fried egg, deep fried shallots, deep fried garlic+oil...11 different ingredients in ONE popiah (with 2 types of sauces as well - chili & sweet sauce)

Step 1: Smother some sauce on your popiah skin...

Step 2: Load your popiah with ingredients!
Caution: Don't be greedy, else your popiah will "burst"/break apart...

Step 3: Wrap up!
If you roll it well, your popiah will hold as a piece instead of crumbling apart ;)

Step 4: Eat up!
*nom nom nom*

MUST HAVE for Dumpling Festival: Glutinous Rice Dumplings
We had a giant one for sharing! Costs roughly RM22.00/dumpling...

It's a treasure chest of porkilicious goodness...
You'll find pork, salted egg yolk, chestnuts, black mushrooms, oysters, Chinese waxed sausages & I reckon some other ingredients, all hidden inside a giant glutinous rice dumpling :D

Cousins: Time to dig in!

I love simple meals such as these :) How did you "celebrate" the Dumpling Festival?

Love home-made popiah,
