Venue: Restoran Nyonya Makko, Malacca Raya area
Overall comment: One of the best authentic nyonya food places in Malacca. You have to make prior reservations to avoid disappointment! This restaurant is often packed with people!

I was in Malacca several weeks ago with the Jeremiah School students. We were invited to a sumptuous dinner by some Malacca Wesley church members, together with some of the youths at this popular Nyonya food restaurant. This restaurant is located in Melaka Raya area, walking distance from Dataran Pahlawan.
As mentioned earlier, the restaurant is often packed with people, locals & tourists as well. I reckon it's more popular with the locals than the tourists. You have to make your reservations just in case they're fully booked! It's THAT good...
The restaurant isn't very large. It has simple "traditional" decorations adorning the walls, & there's nothing fanciful to shout about...the downside about this restaurant is that the whole restaurant smells of food, so you'll end up walking out of the restaurant smelling like the restaurant itself! *eeuuw*
We were introduced to some of the restaurant's signature dishes :) So, here's what we had that night!
Fried Beancurd with Spicy Peanut Sauce
This dish was slightly spicy, but the peanuts gave the bland beancurd some extra fragrance & texture :)
Pongteh Chicken
One of the most famous & common Nyonya dishes is this Pongteh Chicken. It has a lot of shallots & soya bean paste ("tau si" in Cantonese) as the base of the dish. The chicken & potatoes are braised to perfection, until the aroma of the ingredients blend together with the humble chicken & potato pieces :) Here's a Pongteh Chicken recipe I got from some website: Chicken Pongteh Recipe.
Spicy Sambal Shrimps
If you're a fan of shrimps/prawns in some spicy & slightly sweet sauce, you'll certainly love this dish!
Omelette with Cincalok & Vegetables
I couldn't really taste the cincalok (fermented small shrimps/krill) in this omelette! :( If Danny didn't mention that there's cincalok in this omelette, I wouldn't even know! Perhaps the restaurant needs to put more cincalok into this egg dish?
Lady's Fingers with Spicy Onion Sambal
This is a very simple vegetable dish. I reckon all they did was to blanch the lady's fingers in boiling water & pour the onion sambal over the veg...the lady's fingers were nicely cooked (not under-cooked!), so it was really enjoyable.
Stir-Fried Sweet Potato Leaves with Dried Shrimp Sambal
I found this slightly spicy, but thank goodness the vegetables weren't old :)
