Solo Travel Part 11 - Ipoh

>> Monday, December 13, 2010

If I were to really blog about my Ipoh trip in detail, I think I will need more than 3 posts! Just to save some time, here are some good food places that you should try out while you're in this lovely town :)

1. Funny Mountain's Tau Fu Fah

Address: Jalan Theatre
GPS: N04 35.682' E101 5.057'
Business hour: 10:00a.m. - sold out
Tel: (+6016) 595 0369, (+605) 546 9968

One of the best, if not the best tau fu fah I've ever had in my entire life! Indulge into a gingery-taste syrup with smooth tau fu fah for just RM0.70/bowl :P You may just have to line up (either in a human-line or in your car) for your bowl of dessert, but it's sure worth the wait ;)

2. Hong Kee Mah Chee (Peanut Gruel/"Fa Sang Wu" & "Mah Chee")
Address: 550A, Jalan Queen, Pasir Pinji, 31050 Ipoh
GPS: N04 34.392' E101 5.246'
Tel: (+6012) 3828 651
Business hour: 1.30pm-6.00pm

Price: RM2.00/plate of mah chee, RM2.00/bowl of peanut gruel

Try not to miss out sinking your teeth into the famous peanut mah chee at Pasir Pinji while you're at Ipoh. The "mah chee" is chewy, not too soft 'til it sticks onto your teeth, & not too chewy 'til you find it tough to swallow. It's my 1st time having such lovely mah chee (unlike the ones I get from pasar malams/night markets). The grounded peanut + sugar that goes with the mah chee is also fine & not over-powering with sugar, which was excellent!

The peanut gruel/"fa sang wu" is also smooth, slightly salty, & pleasantly sweet! Oh, so delicious...I could have bowls of it!!

Not too far from Hong Kee Mah Chee's stall stand the crispy "siew yoke"/roast pork stall & the deep-fried cempedak+sweet potatoes+"nin kou" stall. You can get pretty delicious tea break goodies here!

Siew Yoke Pasir Pinji
GPS: N04 34.559' E101 5.213'

Fried Cempedak Pasir Pinji
GPS: N04 34.538' E101 5.214'

3. "Dai-Sai Kiok"/Big-Small Feet @ Kum Kee
Address: 798-799, Jalan Sekolah, 31650 Ipoh, Perak.
GPS: N04 34.303' E101 5.335'
Business hour: 6:00p.m. - about 2:00-3:00a.m.
Note: It's located directly opposite the Pasir Pinji police station & isn't too far from the wet market.

If you're a fan of pig's trotter or even braised chicken feet, you wouldn't want to miss stopping by at Kum Kee, Pasir Pinji. This humble coffeeshop sure has much delightful 'delicacies' to offer! Apart from their "big-small feet", they also serve steamed chicken/"pak cham kai" & yong tau foo, alongside the unforgettable kuey teow soup! The soup's base is soya beans, which makes the soup very sweet & yummy :) I didn't have the kuey teow soup as I prefer my noodles to be dry with dark sauce. Don't forget to end your meal with a delicious bowl of tau fu fah as well! (of course Funny Mountain's still the king of tau fu fah...hehe, but this isn't too bad either)

4. Pak Kong Chicken Rice
Address: Jalan Theatre
GPS: N04 35.680' E101 5.018'

Fluffy & fragrant "oily" rice served with roast/steamed chicken...it's so good, you'll have to line up for your dose of Ipoh's famous chicken rice! You'll also find some of the most famous food items around the area e.g. Funny Mountain's Tau Fu Fah, Aun Kheng Lim's Salt-Baked Chicken, & Sin Eng Heong's Kaya Puff...just to name a few.

5. Chang Keong Dim Sum
Address: 34, Jalan Raja Ekram (Cowan Street), 30450 Ipoh.
GPS: N04 35.842' E101 5.142'
Tel: (+6012) 467 7841 - Chang Keong/ (+6016) 541 5877 - Sakura Ng
Business hour: 5:30a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

In my personal opinion, the dim sum here is much better than Foh San's. The last time I had my breakfast at Foh San, I was quite disappointed. Not only do I have to wait for a long time for a place to sit, I also need to wait for the food to come by *sigh* The only down-side at Chang Keong is the lacking of air-conditioner. Apart from that, the dim sum here is good! The fish ball/paste is recommended, plus their variety of dim sum is also quite commendable :) It doesn't have as many "fancy dim sum" like Foh San, but it's good enough for a satisfying meal of Chinese dim sum for the PerutBesi!

I had so many other good food, thanks to my top-notch host, Yi Pa! Here are some other places for good food:
  • Makanan Laut Delight: N04 35.984' E101 4.930'
  • Yik Sun's Hakka Mee: N04 35.803' E101 4.687'
  • Ipoh's Famous Pomelo: N04 35.209' E101 8.074'
  • Toong Keng's Toast: N04 34.646' E101 7.404'
  • Ipoh Yee Lok's Pan Mee: N04 34.673' E101 7.365'
I hope this post will help you when you're food hunting around Ipoh ;) Stay tuned with PerutBesi for I've more food post to come!
