Solo Travel Part 2 - Kuantan (Best Nasi Lemak in town)

>> Monday, November 8, 2010

If you mention nasi lemak, most Kuantanians will direct you to Restoran Zaman, along the Jalan Gambang road. I was very fortunate to dig into Kuantan's best nasi lemak on my way to Bukit Tinggi for the Deepavali weekend ;)

What's so nice about this nasi lemak is the fragrant rice, accompanied by the sweet & spicy sambal. Yup, that's about it! Throngs of people stop by Restoran Zaman for a meal, especially those on their way out of Kuantan, heading towards Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, or even Pekan.

The restaurant opens as early as 6am, feeding the hungry workers working nearby (and even lorry drivers headnig towards Pekan) & families heading off for a holiday! Car park is quite a problem, but if you're patient enough, you'll somehow find a parking lot. It's best to be at the restaurant earlier to avoid disappointment. Once the clock strikes 8 o'clock in the morning, you'll have difficulties getting a table/a place to sit!

The "production line" for nasi lemak behind the shop
You won't find packets of nasi lemak on the table unless you're here very early in the morning. More often than not, you'll have to head to the back of the shop & line up for your piping hot nasi lemak...

People just line up (sometimes more than half an hour!), just to get their nasi lemak
Most people will wait for more than 1 packet of nasi lemak. If not, erm....I doubt you'll actually bother waiting for so long, will you? But of course, for some good nasi lemak, you may just test your patience to its maximum! ;)

Steaming hot nasi lemak (RM1.70/packet)
Here's your packet of fragrant coconut-milk rice with sweet & spicy sambal ikan bilis, 2/3 of a boiled egg, a slice of cucumber, & some fried peanuts, all wrapped up in banana leave + waxed brown paper! Yum!

Not only does their nasi lemak sell like hot cakes, even their roti canai has a long line of people waiting! You may really wonder what's so good about the humble roti canai here. I can't say that it's the best in town, but it is pretty tasty.

Waiting line for roti canai

Roti Canai Restoran Zaman (RM1.00/piece)
Crispy, has the marjerin fragrance, & fluffy too! The dhal is not too bad, but could be better.

Lontong (RM4.00/serving)
This restaurant serves a variety of food apart from the famous nasi lemak & roti canai. If you're too hungry to wait, their lontong isn't too bad. You'll find compacted rice (nasi impit) in some vegetable stew (lodeh) consisting of eggplants/brinjals, cabbage, long beans, & carrots, cooked in coconut milk + turmeric powder. It is best eaten with some sambal ikan bilis to give the lontong a spicy-kick to the somewhat bland "broth". They also have other types of noodles & rice at the restaurant.

Yo Ruth, Michael here, your uni-mate...

Talking bout Nasi lemak in Kuantan, if at night, there in 1 food court (corner shop) at Jalan Beserah (Opposite Shell and Perodua) having a Malay nasi lemak among all other chinese food stalls. Crowded, people willing to Q for it even the price is a bit expensive than market rate. Should taste it
