Yummy Vegetarian Lunch!

>> Friday, May 7, 2010

Venue: My Vegetarian Restaurant, Taman Equine
Occasion: Lunch with colleagues
Overall comment: I'm very surprised at the quality of the vegetarian food, the price, & the ambiance! This place is like a "fast-food" vegetarian restaurant. It's certainly a thumbs up... rather different from all my past experiences of vegetarian food :) I would certainly recommend this place for a change.
Halal: Yes (vegetarian should be halal, right?)

I was at this restaurant last month with my colleagues. Alex & Rao stumbled upon this restaurant one day & had no doubts of returning to try out other dishes here. These 2 colleagues/friends aren't the most keen on vegetables, but they wouldn't mind coming back to this place from time to time! What does this tell? Hmm...certainly some 'good' food to investigate & discover...

Total bill = RM64.60 for 7 persons

The restaurant
No one would have noticed this relatively new vegetarian restaurant. It didn't have any promotional banner nor does it have a striking shop color. But I certainly like the color & ambiance of the restaurant - feels "fresh" & "cool".

Interior Design
The "fresh" & "cool" kinda feel in the restaurant makes it a very enjoyable place to dine. Furthermore, the restaurant has good air-conditioner, so it really felt like a vegetarian fast-food restaurant. (Yes, service is efficient too!) I wonder why they don't have steady flow of customers during lunch hour...it's a good place to have a meal le...

The Menu - Drinks
They have quite an extensive menu of drinks at reasonable prices

The Menu - Snacks/Side Orders
Don't look down on their snacks. Each portion large enough for 2 or more persons to enjoy together! It's a 'snack' after all ;)

The Menu - Noodles
I've yet to try their other noodles... more often than not, we're more keen on the rice sets when we go out for lunch unless we're not really hungry.

The Menu - Rice
Yet a good variety of rice sets to pick & choose. Totally spoilt for choice!

The Menu - Dishes
Aside from the rice & noodle sets, you can order ala carte dishes & rice as well. It's slightly more expensive, but the portion isn't too bad :) Most importantly, the taste is still good! I reckon such dishes are good for families :)

Wheatgrass (RM2.20/bottle)
Green Tea (RM2.00/cup)
Ice Lemon Plum (RM3.50/glass)

Deep-Fried Oyster Mushrooms (RM8.00/serving)
One of the best deep-fried mushrooms that I have ever tasted. I'm serious! Crispy batter that wasn't too thick, with whole oyster mushroom that you can actually chew & taste! What more can you ask? Of course, the best deep-fried mushrooms (swiss browns) that I've ever had was at Cameron Highlands. Oh, "no fight ar..."...

Hakka Deep-Fried Meat with Rice (RM5.90/set)
This doesn't taste anything like the Hakka "char yoke", as stated in the menu (in Chinese). It's more like sweet + sourish sauce with so-called pork. Hahaha...it's nonetheless quite appetizing. Oh ya, noticed the rice? Looks SO cute, right? Presentation thumbs up! Kids will love it! :D

Curry Fish with Rice (RM6.50/set)
The curry is quite tasty - it's not spicy though...probably resemble Japanese curry ;) Of course, having actual fish would be glorious...hahaha...but this so-called fish doesn't taste too bad. The shape of the rice paints a smile on your face & you'll eat happily without much complaints - the power of good food presentation.

Chinese Fried Rice (RM5.90/set)
When I first saw this humble serving of fried rice, I instantly turned into a kid - heart-shaped!! The portion is certainly incomparable to those that you get from the Chinese hawker or "dai chow" stalls, but such a portion keeps you full enough to give you some satisfaction (unless of course you're a monstrous eater). Taste-wise, it's a 'lil on the bland side, but I've no idea what we should expect from vegetarian fried rice! Hahaha...

Satay Chicken with Rice (RM5.90/set)
Hmm...doesn't really have the "kick" of authentic satay. It is flavourful, but not enough to keep you happy 'til the end of your meal. For a hungry Ah Yim, this was not enough!

"Kung Pou" Chicken with Rice (RM5.90/set)
I've no idea how this tastes like. I'm sure it's fairly good since there wasn't any complaints from my colleague who had this :P

Cold Special Sesame Noodles (RM4.80/bowl)
I had the noodles since I wasn't very hungry that day. It was recommended by the staff there as something unique. Well, it was to a certain extend. They used grounded black sesame for the sauce/gravy, & loads of carrots + cucumber strips to accompany the noodles. This reminded me of Vietnamese noodles! The taste is a 'lil bland, but the fragrance of the sesame seed was evident. The texture of the noodles were quite nice as well - not too soft, & feels like fettuccine! :D

Mini Tom Yam Steamboat (RM12.00/set)
I highly recommend this set! Terrific tom yam soup! It wasn't too sour, nor was it too spicy 'til your tongue goes numb (hence you can't taste anything else)! It's actually best & most fun to share it with family/friends :D We had this as an additional dish & we had no regrets at all :)

While I was there, I found out that this is a branch of the 1st restaurant in Puchong...hmm...interesting. Such a simple, humble restaurant has a branch! :)

**********
Just today, I introduced PS to this restaurant. It was a girls-lunch for the 3 of us (PS, Rao, myself), & it was awesome lunch! We ordered too much for the 3 of us & were stuffed to the brim! But food was good!! Strange how vegetarian food can taste good :P

Total bill = RM65.80 for 3 persons (*gasps!!*)

Honeydew Juice (RM3.80/glass)
Pineapple Juice (RM3.80/glass)
Ice-Blended Soursop & Guava with "Crystals" (RM4.80/glass)
Nice :)

This time, PS said to order ala carte, since Rao & I rarely do so. It's slightly more expensive, but the taste doesn't change :)

Hakka Deep-Fried Meat (RM9.00/serving)
As mentioned above, it's nothing like the "char yoke" that I know. Nonetheless nice...feels more like marmite meat....lol. The texture of the 'meat' is actually 'springy'... interesting...

Curry Mutton (RM10.00/serving)
This dish was quite flavourful. I enjoyed the gravy, which goes well with rice. I just find vegetarian 'mutton' cheating la...it's more like just mushrooms with curry...hahahaha....it SO lacks the smell & taste of REAL GOAT!! *rofl*

Stir-Fried Sweet Potato Leaves (RM9.00/serving)
This dish is slightly expensive, in my opinion. The taste is very common, with just some added 'pork lard' alongside the vegetable.

Special Mini Yam Cake (RM12.00/serving)
YUMMY! I love the yam...so soft & 'powdery'... lovely! The taste is just nice - not too salty, nor too sweet. It just lacks gravy & meat! There weren't much 'meat' in the yam basket/cake. It seems to have more peppers & beans! Eeee....anyways, if you enjoy yam, you should give this a try :)

We also ordered the mini tom yam steamboat. Just imagine - 3 ladies eating 5 dishes worth more than RM60 (similar amount of $$ that could feed 7 ppl!!). It's total madness, but it was sure "Syiok ar...!" ;)

->C & C: Serious? Well, for me it really depends how it's cooked. This one's not too bad :) It's much better than most vegetarian restaurants (exceptional for those high-class veggie restaurants) :) U should try it someday!

lol... i am only rating the 4 by the look of it... not by the taste of it yet... haha... would like to try it someday :)
