Nak Won Korean BBQ Restaurant, Taman Desa

Venue: Nak Won Korean BBQ Restaurant, Taman Desa
Overall comment: Decent Korean BBQ place to dine. I'm not entirely sure of the difference between Nak Won & Doe Rae, but I guess you can't really go wrong with these 2 choices in terms of variety & taste. Stephie thinks that Nak Won is slightly cheaper though.
Halal: No

Stephie enjoys Korean food. Our first dinner together during my industrial training days was Korean food at Jalan Ampang. That was like "our Korean food place". Given a choice, we'll not dine at any other Korean restaurants. Unfortunately, that place closed down. I guess the competition that little homey restaurant had with the rest of the Korean BBQ food chains across the road was too great to bear. In fact, right opposite Ampang Point is the Korean village, so I'm not too surprised (though sad) that this small restaurant packed up.

Not too long ago, I met up with Stephie & Munzie, my ex-colleagues during my industrial training days at Nak Won Korea BBQ restaurant in Taman Desa. It has been more than 2 1/2 years since we met!! Crazily long, eh? And yes, we still keep in touch from time to time :) It was Stephie's idea to try out this place where she frequents, so we trusted her taste :)

The Interior of the Restaurant
You can opt to sit on the floor like the Koreans or on chairs at the tables.

The Variety of Side Dishes - 12 DISHES!

Korean Kimchi
This is a must have when you're having a Korean meal. I feel that it's an acquired taste. Some people love it, some don't. I'm in the middle - I don't fancy it, but I don't mind having it...ahaha...certain places made it too sour or too spicy that I just can't find enjoyment in it. So far, the best kimchi I've ever had was back in Korea! Oh, how I miss those days...

Deep-Fried Potato Slice in Egg Batter
This is actually one of the many side dishes that I enjoyed most. It's the most unhealthy thanks to the amount of oil, but it's the most delicious!

BBQ Pork Belly (RM26.00/set)
It's a set for 1 person, but we ordered to share. I can't really recall what portion of the pork this is, but roughly all their marinated pork for BBQ are around the same price & taste. It's quite tasty when wrapped with the lettuce & dipped with the 'sauce'.

Complimentary Steamed Egg
It's somewhat overdone. Unlike our Chinese steamed egg, which is smooth, this one's a bit rougher & has onions + sesame seed. I don't really fancy it, but it's actually not too bad.

Dokbokgi (RM18.00/serving)
This dokbokgi [stir-fried Korean rice cakes with sweet & spicy sauce] is quite delicious. The rice cakes aren't too hard/chewy, nor is it too soft - just of the right texture. The sauce was lovely as well. At least it's not too spicy! The rice cakes are accompanied by fish cakes, carrots, cabbage, & hard boil egg. Me like :)

Stir-Fried Chap Chae (RM25.00/serving)
Chap Chae is a popular noodle dish in Korea. It's like our Chinese glass noodles, with a slight twist in texture; it is "springy", thicker than glass noodles, & slightly more starchy as well. This chap chae is stir-fried with vegetables & is quite sufficient as your main dish. I kinda enjoyed this although I was quite full by the time I started on this!

It was a great catch-up session & dinner :) Good food, good friends - what more can I ask? :D

Note: I just realized that the watermark on this post's photos are inaccurate. It's in Taman Desa, not Sri Petaling! *sigh* Too lazy to ammend d la... in addition, a cup of green tea is RM2.00 (refillable, I think)

Yup... definitely similar to Dao Rae in terms of dishes. However, in Dao Rae you have to order a mininum two BBQ dishes :) I noticed that you only order one pork belly

->thule: Ah! I'm not aware that we have to order min 2 BBQ dishes! Maybe my friends & I did order 2 BBQ dishes the last time we ate at Dao Rae...at Nak Won, there's no minimum, so it's good! :D
