What's with JB?

>> Saturday, March 6, 2010

Dates: 17 - 20 February, Wednesday - Saturday
Venue: Johor Bahru
Occasion: Meet up with Mabel in JB

What's with JB that the PerutBesi keeps going there at least once a year??

Firstly, there's PerutBesi's close friend, Mabel - the crazee cow :D

Then, there's the food!
Of course, I can get Pizza Hut's Cheesy pizzas anywhere, but to enjoy it with a good friend, it's even better ;)

Baked Chicken Wings with Italian Herbs & Sesame Seed Oil
It was a bonus to have Mabel's mum cook dinner for us! *yippeee!!*

Kampung-Style Fried Rice
The rice & beans were very fragrant & pssst...(whispers) I actually love fried rice, especially those with french/long beans!

Garden Salad

To balance the nutrient intake, vitamins & fibre were highly essential

Herbal Soup
It was strange to have such a combination of dishes for dinner, but I loved it all! This soup was very tasty (and sweeeeeettt). I could down 2 medium-sized bowls of it!

Each time I get to JB, there are a few food items that I HAVE TO eat. One of them is "ice-kacang with chocolate sauce", & the best I had so far are at Tmn Pelangi during the day & near the JB clock tower during the night. However, our usual stall was closed as it was still Chinese New Year, so we tried another outlet.

Halal: Yes

(seems like the food part is never-ending, eh? :D)

Restoran Malay Village
Operated by the Malays with a mixture of people of all races working there, this place gave a good 1st impression. I reckon it's a rather new food outlet since I have never noticed its existance the last time I was in JB.

Mabel's Parents with the Ice Kacang Special

Without a doubt, I had to order the ice kacang special with chocolate sauce...oh...my strange cravings... (Mabel's parents look SO cute...teehee)

Ice Kacang Special (RM5.50/serving)
My craving for ice kacang with chocolate sauce was satisfied, but I wasn't very delighted with the overall taste & "umph" of the dessert *sigh* I miss my usual stall's! :( This one looks nice, but doesn't taste as yummy, plus, it's double the price of my usual stall's!!!)

Mixed Fruits (RM6.00/serving)
This was quite a surprise...we thought it would be something like the ice-kacang, but with mixed fruits; it turned out to be actual mixed fresh fruits! Interesting...but it was too expensive for a plate of mixed LOCAL fruits! The only fruit that wasn't "local" was the green apple...you could easily get all the types of fruits anywhere for a much cheaper price! *disappointed*

Cendol (RM4.50/serving)
Looking at the photo, it's very unexpected, isn't it? We were really expecting something in a bowl, with ice floating in a pool of coconut milk, but oh well, what can you expect from such a "posh" place? No comparison to the usual roadside cendols.

PerutBesi with her ginormous-looking ice-kacang

Malay Village restaurant offers ikan bakar as well, but somehow I feel that food here could not be taken as comparison with the food at the usual stalls up ahead on Jalan Mohd Amin.

BBQ Squid (RM7.90/ 2 squids)
This was actually quite delicious. If only there was more! The sauce used for the barbecue was slightly spicy, salty, & has the fragrance of dried shrimp (I think - I can't fully recall how it tastes like now).

Ikan Pari Bakar/Sting-Ray (RM12.00 - according to weight)
This was a failure. The fish was somehow too "old" & the sauce poured on top of the fish didn't really go well with the grilled fish. It's a sweet & spicy sauce.

Eating does not end in JB.

The next day, we had a simple lunch at the Lavender Bakery & Bistro, a large chain bakery, popular in JB. Surprisingly, the food here is not too bad & there's a constant crowd at almost all the Lavender bakery outlets!

Halal: Yes

Lavender Bakery & Bistro near Taman Pelangi

Red Plum Soda (around RM5.90)
Soda + preserved plum + syrup.

Penang-Style Fried Kuey Teow (around RM6.90)
Surprising good, but shall not be compared with the hawker centres nor the original Penang hawker centres'. Serving is pretty generous.

Broccoli Salad (around RM8.90)
Yeap, I thought this was over-priced! It was no doubt refreshing & healthy, but it's something that we could do at home & have it done equally well, with just half the price! *sigh* I'm such a sucker for bistro-priced food...hahaha...home-cooked is the best! You can just imagine how I will be in the near future ;)

Grilled Chicken with Black Pepper Sauce & Mashed Potatoes (around RM12.90)
I enjoyed this. The chicken piece was juicy, tender, & flavorful. The sauce was delightfully delicious, while I could have more of the mashed potatoes! Presentation is quite impressive too, huh?

Japanese Rice with Fried Chicken, Egg, & Veg
I forgot the name & the price as well =.=" So much for trying to recall *sigh* By the way, this was quite nice & filling too...

Mushroom Soup (around RM5.90)
Yes, it is quite expensive & doesn't seem very worth having, but I really wanted to try. The soup's 1st impression was good, but the taste wasn't as good as it looks, unfortunately. The cook used too much starch (yes, starch! just imagine that...) for the soup...in fact, there shouldn't be starch, but cream! Once is enough. The toast was lovely, though.

If you thought that was my last meal in JB, I'm sorry to disappoint you :P

We had steamboat dinner at Mabel's uncle's house, after which, we had a late supper of uncle Victor's craving - "kuey teow kia". He had to have it, no matter how late it was! By the time we started on the meal, it was midnight :S Yes, it's the easiest way for the PerutBesi to gain more weight than she ever needed *sigh*

Halal: No

Restoran Hi Wan
This was our 2nd bet for "kuey teow kia". Our "usual restaurant" wasn't opened then (I think it's because of CNY). It's a very popular place & the place was packed even after 10pm! Perhaps JB ppl love "kuey teow kia" for supper?

Prepare to feel the knots in your stomach if you're NOT a fan of pig's intestines!

Pig's Ears
Oh yes, the ears could also be eaten. Have you tried them? It's quite yummy :P

Pork in Dark Soya Sauce
Tender & fragrantly cooked pork slices.

Braised Beancurd & Hard Boiled Eggs in Soya Sauce

Deep Fried Pork Wraps
This one was one of the best dishes here :)

Pig's Small Intestines
It wasn't too chewy - just right :D

Pig's Stomach
I didn't fancy this one as much. If it's in pepper soup, oh, I would enjoy it even more!

"Kuey Teow Kia"
The dishes are best accompanied by the simple kuey teow in clear herbal soup. Delicious.

How did you enjoy reading my post on the eating-spree in JB? Hahaha...I'm sure you won't be surprised to find that I have gained some weight after Chinese New Year, but hmm...it was somehow worth it. I could loose it again & eat again! It's a 'vicious' cycle...ahahahaha...do drop me some comments & suggestions, especially if it's to improve on this blog :D

More posts are coming up! I've yet to share with all of you on 1 more CNY post & a massive-fun-filled holiday with my colleagues to Kuantan-Kemaman! Stay tuned with PerutBesi!!

I'm lovin' it,
Ruth
