Pre-CNY Gang Gathering

>> Sunday, February 21, 2010

Date: 12 February 2010, Friday
Venue: Loong Foong Seafood Restaurant, Taman Paramount
Occasion: Gathering of high school friends
Overall comment: The food there has always been good, in my opinion. I grew up eating there, especially the roast duck, & so far, the quality has never failed to put a satisfying smile on my face :) Price is reasonable, so no worries 'bout burning a hole in your pocket (unless you order special dishes, available only during festive seasons)

I'm back from my CNY break! *burp* It's been a great break despite some hiccups here & there :) My 2 cousins were complaining that it takes me ages to get a blog post up; to be specific, they commented that it takes me 3 months to get it up =.=" Of course, there are several reasons why I take such a long time to get my blog posts up. I'm either busy, not in the mood to blog, or just too lazy to sit in front of the computer to think of what to write. Hahaha.

Anyways, a day prior to CNY eve, a few of us high school friends gathered for a simple meal. We extended the invitation to more people, but of course, most of our friends, especially the Chinese, were either traveling or already back in their hometown. In the end, only 6 of us gathered, & it was a terrific catch-up! We first had dinner at Loong Foong before adjourning to Brussels Beer Cafe for more catch-up time! This is what happens when we haven't met since Form 5 (that's like almost 9 years!!!)

Yee Sang (Half-portion RM25.00)
The yee sang here tastes just nice. It's not too sweet, nor too sour. The ingredients are fresh & in my opinion, the crispy bits play a large role in making the yee sang "fun" to eat!

Yee Sang Tossing
It is believed that the higher you toss the yee sang, the better fortune/wishes you shall receive. Each time we toss the yee sang together, we will say out "good wishes" for ourselves & each other. The good wishes could consists of words like "best in health", "more wealth & fortune", "get good grades in exams", & "climb up the corporate ladder quickly", mostly said in Cantonese/Mandarin.

Hot Sizzling Plate Beancurd/"Teet Pan Tau Foo" (RM 11.00)
One of the BEST sizzling plate beancurd I have ever had! Seriously.... the fragrance of the gravy was just so irresistible that Theng & I finished up all the left-over gravy! The marriage of minced meat with dried cuttlefish in the gravy gave the dish a VERY unique & unforgettable taste :) Thumbs-up!

Sweet & Sour Pork/"Ku Lou Yoke" (RM 14.00)
The meat were nicely marinated & they weren't too fat nor too lean (nor filled with veins!). The tomato sauce gave the dish a tangy taste, & the fresh tomatoes gave the dish an authentic "tomatoish" experience. Yet another one of my favourite :)

1/4 Roast Duck (RM13.00)
Trust me, that this is one of the most famous & tasty roast ducks you will EVER find in Petaling Jaya. The queue to purchase this dish is usually long & most people will make their reservations prior to collecting the roast duck from the stall. What I enjoy about this duck is that the skin is fragrant & salty (not TOO salty), & the meat is nicely seasoned with salt & five spice powder. You must try this if you have not :)

Four Types of Beans/"Sei Dai Tin Wong" (RM 10.00)
If you fancy beans, this will be one dish you won't want to miss. You'll find lady's fingers, petai, long beans, & four-angle beans, harmoniously stir-fried with sambal belacan. I don't know about you, but I love petai despite the stench that it leaves in your mouth & whatever output you produce after the meal *lol* The lovely green & red colors of the dish just makes it even more appetizing than it sounds and smells.

The Restaurant
The restaurant is quite old now, so it looks a tad dodgy, but don't judge the restaurant by its look ;) You'll be surprised how people just love to dine at this place at any time of the year! (it's one of my family's favourite restaurants)

Venue: Brussels Beer Cafe, Jaya One
Overall comment: Pretty good food & ambiance! It's one of the more happening & popular hang-out places for the young & old alike. As its name speaks, it's mainly for beer-enthusiasts, but they do serve decent western food for those who are there with their beer-drinking friends.

I haven't been to Brussels Beer Cafe before. The other times I was in Jaya One was for either dessert or I just happened to be at some other restaurant.

This beer cafe seems rather popular among youths & young adults. Almost every night, this place will be packed up 'til after midnight. It's a very prominent & easy to spot area at Jaya One, so if you're there, do try this place out. Even if you're not a beer-lover, I'm sure you would enjoy their finger food & a substantial range of main meals.

I also realized that a foodie friend, babe in the city - kl, did some sorta review of this place. She isn't very fond of the food, but the beer selection was certainly thumbs up :) I reckon it's all up to an individual when it comes to food *smiles*

Brussels Beer Cafe

L-R: Leffe Blond (RM26.00), Hoegaarden White (RM28.00 for 1pint), Hoegaarden (RM16.00 for 1/2pint), & Canella Bellini Sparkling Wine Cocktail - Italian (RM19.80)

Dr Ooi with his Virgin Colada (RM16.00)
The gang said this may be the most suitable drink for him :D It was quite funny when he was selecting his drink since he's not a drinker...*lol*

The gang
Some of us have known each other since kindergarten/primary school!

Brussels Style Pork Bacon Cheese Burger (RM18.80)
"Brussels style homemade pork patties wrapped with bacon strips & topped with melted cheese. Served with fries."
[Ruth] Looks SO good, right? I don't know how it tasted since PY was the one who had it, but the smell was enough to tempt me into ordering one (I resisted the temptation since I just had dinner that time!). The pork patty looks thick, juicy, & full of flavour *drools* I HAVE TO try this someday...anyone interested to come with me? :D

Creamy Chicken & Mushrooms with Toast (RM19.80)
"Commonly known as 'vol au vent', it is an open topped sandwich topped with creamy baked chicken with mushroom & meatballs."
[Ruth] I tried a bit of this & it's really delicious :) Slightly more expensive compared to the pork burger, so if you're into something light, this could be your pick.

This is certainly not a place where I will end up in for a catch-up session (since I don't drink), but I can't doubt that it's a pretty good place to just sit down & chill :)

Stay tuned for more updates on PerutBesi! To my 2 cousins, Kris & Lynn, be patient with the updates! *lol* I'll get it done asap...my posts ain't as short & simple as posting pics on FB la...hahaha... ;)
