N.E.S.W. - North (Penang, Day 2)

Occasion: Visitation to the Northern District TRAC MYF committee members, Penang Wesley youths, & Penang Trinity youths.

I've decided to have less words for this Penang series of the N.E.S.W - North. My schedule is pretty tight & if I am to really write & tell my "grandmother stories", I will never be able to get my posts out before the next adventure comes by.

Day 2
It really felt like a holiday for me, despite the fact that I actually came all the way up north to meet the youths under the name of TRAC MYF :P I had the opportunity to wake up later than my usual workdays/weekends! Nice :)

It's my wish & dream to stay in a house near the sea - to open my window & breathe the smell of the sea, feel the sea breeze beating against my face, & be calmed by the tranquil sight of the sea & beach... *continues dreaming* I felt like I was in Dreamland during the weekend...

The plan for the day was breakfast, followed by a drive around town, picking up some Penang biscuits from Him Heang & apong from Ah Guan, visitation to Joshua House - Penang Wesley's youth group, & ending the day with dinner together with the Northern District TRAC MYF committee members & friends :) *fuh* A very packed day it was...

Breakfast at Genting Cafe, Lorong Delima 6

Chee Cheong Fun (RM1.70/small plate or RM2.50/large plate)
One of the best chee cheong fun that I've eaten...Penang's chee cheong fun is very different from the ones we get elsewhere. It's usually with "he ko"/shrimp sauce instead of the usual sweet sauce ("tim cheong"). This one at Genting Cafe is exceptionally good! Not only does it come with shrimp sauce, but I reckon the sauce is mixed with sweet sauce & something peanutish! Some friends claimed the guy added peanut butter!! It's certainly peanut-based. Cheap & good...oh boy, I could eat another plate!

Penang Laksa (RM2.50/bowl)
Aiyo...where else in KL can you get a bowl of noodles for RM2.50?? I felt like some "jakun" with a ravenous appetite that morning! I just want to eat EVERYTHING! The laksa was very delicious...*drools* The curry wasn't too "lemak"/creamy, nor was it watery. It is a MUST to add the shrimp+belacan paste into the soup before consuming the laksa. Without the 'secret recipe', Penang laksa would just be like any usual laksa from down south...

Penang Hokkien Mee a.k.a. Prawn Mee (RM2.50/bowl)
This is apparently one of the best Hokkien Mee you can get around the area. I just managed to try out a bit of it & thought that it was yummy :) Filled with the umph of prawns! :D

After a satisfying breakfast, we went 'shopping' for Penang's famous souvenirs, Penang biscuits. For the locals, Him Heang is usually the 1st choice, so Jane brought us there :)

All I ever wanted was my 'white sugar biscuits' a.k.a. 'Qing Tang Bing', no other, & I bought several boxes of it to be given away as gifts to my family & friends ;)

No other: Ah Guan's Apong @ Jalan BurmaThis is like the #1. apong - delicious pancakes with banana slices & some cream sweet corn. Each piece costs RM0.30 & Jane bought 25 pieces for James & I to share!! *woots!*

All the eating & traveling around Penang city took up half the day. The rest of the day was spent getting stuck in a horrible traffic jam, getting lost in the city on the way to church, & spending some time with the youths in Penang Wesley.

The next agenda after the tiring day was an exciting one - dinner & fellowship!! :D A group of us youths, consisting of National TRAC MYF committee members, Northern District TRAC MYF committee members, & friends cooked up an interesting plan to "jalan-jalan cari makan" through the Saturday evening! The plan brought us to 3 different places for 'dinner' *fuh* I was stuffed to the brim & didn't feel like looking at food anymore after our last stop :P

Pit Stop #1: Bee Hooi Cafe, Kimberly Street
Our friends brought us to one of the better char kuey teows in Penang...

Nutmeg Drink
It's been a long time since I had this drink. Famous & found almost everywhere on the Penang island, this drink is known to be 'cooling' for the body & is also believed to cure coughs. I prefer the nutmeg drink about 15 years ago, where it's not so commercialized & highly concentrated with artificial sugar.

Char Kuey Teow (RM4.50/plate)
Oh yes, it's VERY expensive for Penang standards! I was quite shocked when I saw the price of the fried kuey teow. What's so special about it? Hmm...the uncle fries each plate INDIVIDUALLY & the taste is actually very 'addictive'. It's like those really good, less-oily kinda fried kuey teow, over-flowing in fragrance & taste, accompanied by 2 fresh water prawns & medium-rare cockles! Wah...after finishing one plate, I felt I could still go on for seconds, but we have 2 more places to hit on our plan! :D

Pit Stop #1.5: Tau Foo Fa
Haha...why is this pit stop #1.5? It wasn't part of the plan! Cordi claims that this tau foo fa is really good & that I should give it a try.

Not too bad...can fight with my favourite stall in Sungai Way market, Petaling Jaya & also one of the stalls in SS2 market...*yums...burp* I felt kinda full after my 1st pit stop!

Pit Stop #2: Ikan Bakar Seri Pantai
According to Cordi, this place offers the best ikan bakar & deep fried squids :P
Directions: "From the Penang Bridge, head south towards Batu Maung by the way of the coastal road, exit the Sungai Dua junction towards Bayan Bay, go straight pass a small roundabout and straight towards the sea. (dead end) These food outlets are situated on the beach with wooden tables and chairs, all on the beach. Beside Seri Pantai Ikan Bakar, there is a stall selling Mee Udang and Si Ko Thi'ng (local dessert). The deep-fried cuttle fish serve here is the best." - extracted from Malaysian-Cuisine.com

Deep-Fried Squids (around RM10.00)
Pieces of squid covered in batter & deep fried 'til golden brown. The taste of the squids were actually very addictive & I even enjoyed the taste of the batter! Very crispy & once you start, it's not easy to stop :D

Ikan Pari Bakar/BBQ-ed Sting Ray (around RM18.00)
Not too bad...the barbecued sting ray was actually quite fragrant. It's marinated with some sort of paste, consisting of cumin, ginger, garlic, onions, lemon grass & curry powder...perhaps some other ingredients as well. The chili sauce that accompanies the fish enhances the taste of the fish, but it wasn't necessary as the fish itself tastes good on its own.

Grilled Cockles (around RM3.00)
I'm not a great fan of cockles, but these were overdone :( The cockles shrunk...and were kinda chewy already...I reckon if you like cockles, it would be best served blanched.

Pit Stop #3: Tom Yam Udang
This restaurant belongs to Cordi's student's parents. She recommended us here, saying that their tomyam is good. We ended up paying only RM20.00 for the meal! The lady boss didn't want to charge us initially, but we felt bad for eating so much & not paying at all. In the end, she just charged us a small sum out of courtesy...oh, I can't remember the address of this place. I'll post it up once I get it...I misplaced their name card! *wergh*

Mixed Tom Yam
The tomyam IS quite good :) It's not too spicy, nor was it too sour. Yums! Me likey...there were prawns, squids, & chicken meat.

Stir-fried Chicken with Cashewnuts & Dried Chili
This tasted delicious :) We felt that the chicken pieces here were more tasty than those in the tomyam soup...hahaha...it's slightly spicy, & the sauce tasted a 'lil "Marmite-ish" :)

Stir-Fried Kailan with Salted Fish
One of the best stir-fried kailans I've ever had - check it out, it's still nice & green! Looks SO appetizing & it really was good! Usually, Malay stall will over-cook it, but although this place is also a Malay restaurant, they did it with excellence! *applause*

*burp* After Pit Stop #3, you could literally roll me instead of expecting me to walk on my own feet....I was stuffed to the brim!! Perhaps even on the verge of over-flowing! *faints* Extremely satisfied, we ended the night with Pit Stop #3.... wow, what a day....SO much food!!

Thus ends Day 2 in Penang... I've ONE more day for the Penang post coming up... do stay tuned! I'll be posting it up most probably next week as I will be in Johor Bahru tomorrow for the weekend!!

wow marvelous food in Penang... you should have tried char koay teow with duck egg @ Genting Cafe... very good lah!

Waaaa... the food in Penang looks so yummy and cheap too! U can't find this kind of delicacy which is nice and good price anymore in KL or never in SG! Good luck on ur JB food hunt... been there so many times but didn't know any nice place for food.. haha

->Henry LeE: Hey Henry! No doubt I had a great time in Penang ;) I think in terms of dollar to dollar, you can still get a bowl of noodles for S$2.50, but it's certainly not as delicious as the noodles in Penang! :D Recommendation on JB food coming up ;)

->rokh: If you can make some time, or even a weekend, go to Penang for some makan trip la! It only takes 4hours to get there ;) For good food, what's too far, eh? :D

the laksa is more like Curry Mee. There are two types of Laksa here actually. The Assam Laksa and Lemak Laksa. This is neither one of it.

and Tom Yam Udang is in Jelutong. Specifically where I will get back to you later if you want =)

Pls do help me find out on the Tom Yam Udang place again...I misplaced the name card! :(
