Restoran Korean House, PJ SS2

>> Saturday, May 23, 2009

Date: 17 May 2009, Sunday
Venue: Restoran Korean House, SS2 Petaling Jaya
Occasion: Belated birthday celebration with church friends
Overall comment: The Korean food here is actually quite nice (no wonder they have a constant crowd every week). Their prices are slightly higher than my usual place in Jalan Ampang, but if it's shared, it's actually not too bad. The ventilation isn't exceptionally good, especially when any barbaque takes place...the smoke was kinda trapped in the restaurant & we came out smelling like a piece of bbq-ed meat :P As for variety, I think it's quite limited, but it's sufficient for those who just enjoy the typical/common Korean food. Oh ya, service here is quite slow, but the waiters/waitresses are very helpful.

Fuh...yet another makan session! It's like "see Ruth, see food!" *gah* I'm very thankful to Noel for organizing this little get-together to celebrate my birthday with me :) Thanks to all who came!! I'm so blessed to have all of you as my friends! :D

The dinner was just lovely & the fellowship was very nice & warm :) We were SO stuffed with all the food & the worker there even gave us more food 'on the house' like the 3 bowls of steamed egg in stone bowls (just like the Japanese chawanmushi), a pumpkin soup dessert each, & a bottle of Soju (Korean alcohol) to share & taste, for those who haven't tasted Soju before. I don't really like Soju, since the last time I tasted it in Seoul 3 years ago...

Much said, here are some photos to whet your appetite & crave for some Korean food! :D

This is how the restaurant looks like from outside. It's facing the main road in SS2, near the police station.

Here's 2 portions of chicken...each portion is actually aimed for 1 person, & costs around RM25.00/portion! *faints*

The lamb was really delicious. It's well marinated & is so flavorful that you would ask for more! Just have to bear in mind that lamb is definitely more expensive as compared to chicken...I reckon we paid at least RM40.00/portion & the photo shows 2 portions of lamb.

Lovely pork! Super fat, but oh so yummy!! Guys will love this :D This dish is called 'samgeopsal' in Korean & it costs roughly RM35.00/portion. The photo shows 2 portions.

The variety of side dishes is pretty amazing...plus, as the Korean tradition, all side dishes are refillable (unlimited!)! One could just come here & have one dish plus the many side dishes & be well-fed!

This is their traditional mixed rice (bibimbap) in a hot stone bowl (dol sot). You'll have to mix the sauce given with the rice & vegetables+meat assortment to get the full flavor of the dish :)

I was very surprised when they served the dokbokgi (Korean rice cakes that look like our Malaysian 'chee cheong fun', but the texture is more chewy) like this! I was expecting fried dokbokgi in spicy bean sauce, like they always do in other Korean restaurants like Nak Won & Romance & Cheers, both in Jalan Ampang area. This dish is very special & can be eaten on its own...VERY filling & yummy - it's sweet, savory, & spicy :D

This dish is rather spicy as it contains kimchi (Korean's traditional pickled cabbage), but it's quite delicious & appetizing as well :) There are beancurd, glass noodles, golden mushrooms, leeks, green chilli, seaweed, fish cake, onions, carrots, & kimchi...quite an interesting dish, which once again could be eaten by its own & gets you full ;)

Pumpkin soup...some may like it, some may not (and I know of some friends who would squirm & cringe at the thought of eating pumpkins)...I didn't really enjoy this dessert, but it was 'on the house', so I drank it with gratitude. It looks like egg yolk, but is thicker in texture & sweet too. I think it's a really acquired taste...

->thenomadGourmand: Hi there! I wasn't a great fan of Korean food as well, but I've come to love Korean food after tasting it several times! :D If you're in the PJ area, this restaurant isn't too bad...just a tad costly. If u're in KL, try Romance & Cheers restaurant in Jalan Ampang, near the Ampang Point Shopping Complex!

->rokh: I haven't tried Daorae...I'll usually go back to my usual Korean food place in Jalan Ampang - lovely food & cheaper than others as well.
