Review: Foodies at Souled Out, Desa Sri Hartamas

>> Saturday, May 23, 2009

Date: 21 May 2009, Thursday
Venue: Souled Out, Desa Sri Hartamas
Occasion: Food sampling of Souled Out's refreshed menu & an evening together with foodies, organized by theQguides & Souled Out.
Overall comment: This place sure offers a wide variety of food & drinks to their diners; one can find from local Malaysian cuisines to Western & Asian. The ambiance is very 'happening', as of other hang-out places in Hartamas & Bangsar, plus every now & then, you may be able to catch some good bands playing groovy music to enhance your dining pleasure ;) The variety of drinks are indeed very impressive as well & if you need some recommendation for their best food or drinks, the friendly waiters, waitresses, & even their own managers, will be more than happy to lead you into a dining experience you would remember :) As for the price of food & drinks, it's definitely slightly higher than other places, but if compared to other bistros & cafes, it's ok...

Just before I post up the photos of food & drinks that we had that night, here's a brief write-up about Souled Out:

"SOULed OUT started in September 1996 at the Mont Kiara Shoplex and moved to its current premises at Desa Sri Hartamas in December 1999. It is so named as each member of the staff at SOULed OUT puts his or her heart and soul into the preparation of the best in food with the best in service. They are also known for their showbiz talent!

With a coquettish menu featuring a mix of local and Western favourites and an astute beverage list, SOULed OUT has won many hearts with its easy and familiar personality.

A decade on, SOULed OUT has bloomed into a mature, confident yet innovative and fun dining venue, celebrating life every day where going to SOULed OUT is “as good as a hug”. Popular among young and old, with an eclectic combination of food and beverage and an inimitable style all its own, SOULed OUT has proven to be THE place for any celebration."

I was invited by theQguides to attend this food-sampling event of Souled Out's refreshed menu. It was a Thursday night, so I had to drive to Cyberjaya all the way to Hartamas, which took me at least 1hour one way :S I didn't have anything to do in Cyber anyways, so it's a good get-away, as well as an opportunity to meet up with new & old foodies ;)

We had a good time catching up & savoring Souled Out's 'come-back dishes' as well as their 'newly introduced dishes'. Fanny, Marketing Manager (a.k.a. Propaganda Pixie) of Souled Out, made all the recommendations & gave us a wonderful dining time :) Although each of us ate a bit of each dish, I was SO full by the end of the night!

Drink, Drank, Drunk
Below are some of the drinks that we had. To the surprise of many, all I had through the whole night was that one glass of Dragonfly...hahaha...the rest had at least 2 glasses of drinks :)

Dragonfly (RM12.00/glass)
- Detoxyfying & Power-juice Category -
Our signature juice. Red dragon fruit, watermelon, strawberry puree, Monin lychee syrup, fresh lemon juice.

Malibu Sunrise (around RM35.00/glass)
- I think it's under the Jumbo Cocktail Category -
A blend of Absolut Vanilla, Malibu, Cointreau, pineapple juice, grenadine, lime juice, cranberry juice, orange and lime slices.
See that small guy beside the drink? He's Frat Mustard, 'Marketing Manager' for theQguides...hahaha...

Harry's Crunch (RM30.00/glass)
- Signature Cocktails Category -
Gold Award in 2008 Mixology Competition, HORECA School of Excellence - Created by our very own Harry, this award winning warm combination of vodka, Bailey’s Crème de Cacao, chocolate sauce, pandan syrup, topped with crunchy cornflakes is heavenly mix.

'A common cocktail where I can't recall its name' Cosmopolitan :S
Bangsar-Babe had this, & she told me the name TWICE, but being a non-alcoholic drinker, I guess I'm just horrible in remembering names of drinks with alcohol. Bummer.
(Thanks Bangsar-Babe for reminding me of the name!! Hahaha)

Bollywood Calling
Okies, here comes the array of food that we partook! *burp* 10 dishes...?? Oh yes, that's the much we had :P

sizzling plate.
Accompanied by Naan - wheat bread baked in a tandoor

*Naan can be replaced with a choice of rice or chips

It Aint Western
This category of dishes are mainly local dishes. It doesn't taste too bad...just that it's lacking in the 'chue yao char'(lard)! Aisehman...I love the Kuey Teow Beef Tau Si best :) Nice.

Pan Seared Grouper (RM23.00/serving) – SO Brand Spanking New
Grilled grouper fish fillet over mixed cajun pasta, topped with roasted sliced cherry tomato and pepper.

SO Pizza - Woodfire Over-Baked
Pizza! If you love thin-crust pizza, Souled Out's pizzas are quite good. You HAVE TO eat it when it's served hot, otherwise it'll be hard & chewy *crunch crunch crunch* The Sake San is quite interesting. I would never have thought of such an idea...hahaha...wasabi....eeek!

B-B-Q Chicken (RM19.00 for 8”/RM24.00 for 11”) - SO Brand Spanking New
Marinated B-B-Q chicken, corn kernels, BBQ sauce, pepper and tomato salsa.

You can call this section of food as 'snacks' or 'lite bites'. I reckon such food goes well with beer...

Roast Beef Baguette (RM18.00/serving) – Good Ol’ Fav
Baguette topped with sliced beef, salad, mushrooms, cheese and baked.

Sin City (desserts)
Awesome-possum! Mouth-watering, sinful desserts. If you're a sweet tooth, you will really enjoy the desserts below. I was too full to fully enjoy the desserts :P But I just can't resist the Lava Cake...it's TOO good! Warm, moist, chocolate cake with cold vanilla ice cream....oo-la-la...*drools at the thought of it*
